Track #11

Figghia di'n Massaru

(The Almond Sorter’s Song)
This is a narrative song from Sicily, which tells the tragic tale of the young daughter of a farm steward (mas-
saru) who was condemed to death because she feared the loss of her inheritance upon her widowed father’s
remarriage. This song, recorded by Alan Lomax and Diego Carpitella during their field research in Italy in the
1950’s, was sung by farm workers (almond sorters) to pass the time away. It appears on the Lomax collection
of Sicilian traditional music, re-released on Rounder Records.
