HEALTHCARE SITUATIONS

 Global

Access to healthcare providers varies around the world. Losing time when in need of medical
attention can affect patient suffering and is one of the drivers of general dissatisfaction with
healthcare systems. Problems are global. Developing countries are not alone in the world struggle
to match the demand for medical providers. In relation to this, it is estimated that between 11%
and 17% of the population are willing to pay an extra charge for private healthcare, whether to
avoid long waiting times, to access new medical treatment and technology, or to avoid the
perceived risk of infection in public-sector hospitals.

We all have our own ideal healthcare service. It is upsetting that some people around the world
are not capable to receive the treatment they need to have. This situation is evident in our country
wherein some of us were able to witness patients waiting outside the facility due to overflowing
capacity where healthcare providers are also loaded with patients. I have also read situations like
this happening on developed countries like the United States and United Kingdom, wherein
patients also experience more suffering from their condition because of inadequate deliverance of
healthcare. We are not fortunate enough to experience access issues in needing healthcare.
Physicians and every healthcare professionals are doing the best they can to provide the best
treatment they can provide. It just so happen, that facilities in every country may not be enough in
the population of the place. Because it seems that population are increasing in number but some
healthcare facilities remain the same. Leaving the burden to healthcare providers and to patients
in need. But some people who has more access, choose to spend more. Who are they to blame
when all they want is to satisfy their health needs, right? I believe that access to care does not
only mean getting the needed health service, but can also be measured by the level of its use in
relation to the need.

 National

The challenge of finding affordable medical equipment in the Philippines is relevant. Both
public and private hospitals in the Philippines face a great challenge in sourcing medical
equipment that is both reliable and affordable. As a result of an extremely limited local medical
device production, over 95% of medical devices are imported from other countries. Notably, many
hospital owners and doctors are reluctant to buy equipment from other countries. Others worry
that they will not be able to afford high quality equipment. Many doctors and clinic owners have no
idea where to go to source dependable medical devices at a fair price.

Philippines is listed as one of the developing countries in the world. And almost all of us are
well-aware about the fact that not all healthcare facilities in our country has the needed equipment
to provide treatment in patients in the community. I have witnessed people I know in our area who
travel to cities in order to receive their needed treatment with regards to their health condition, this
shows that there are known hospitals which still has limited medical equipment. Probably the
reason why, is about affordability. And maybe because there are not enough patients who need
that specific equipment for treatments and is costly to invest at.

 Local

The municipality of Santa Cruz, Laguna launched the ‘Santa Cruz Kaya Natin!’ Mobile Clinic to
Barangay San Juan and Barangay San Jose, which will soon reach the other barangays of the
municipality. Doctors and other healthcare professionals were involved in order to ensure and
emphasize the importance of health especially now that we are in the crisis of a pandemic. This
project is also done to have attention about health promotion of all people in the municipality and
also to address the crisis brought by Corona Virus Disease-19. Aside from this, the officials
decided to do COVID-19 testing to the municipal employees, and done contact tracing to those
who were infected with COVID-19.

The officials of Santa Cruz, Laguna is doing a great job in battling with the pandemic. It is good
that they have also focused in delivering health to communities, now that not all people of all ages
can go out of their house for health consultation. Hospitals are stricter in receiving patients, and
some people consider going to hospitals dangerous for they think they have a higher risk to be
affected with COVID-19. Their idea of providing mobile clinic is essential to everyone in the
community, they were able to provide services and lowered the risk of other people’s exposure to
such situations. The municipal officials and employees have also handled the COVID-19 situation,
wherein areas in the municipality are often disinfected, done contact tracing, and rapid testing.
These actions were done to ensure the health of people living in the community, and to provide
services needed by everyone as much as possible.
