Two Shiploaders for Coal at Qinhuangdao Port,China

Handling Capacity: 8,000 tph

2004 a milestone contract was awarded to TKIS
for design, supply and commissioning of 4 units
shiploaders for coal by the port of Quinhuang-
dao, the world largest coal terminal.
All of the shiploaders have been designed to
reach a peak capacity of 8,940 t/h and to serve
ships up to Capesize, with two of them being
designed as travelling type with luffing and
telescopic boom and the other two with slewing
and telescopic boom.
The port of Quinhuangdao is situated on the
north side of the bay of Bohai. As an internatio-
nal port and one of the most important export
ports (Qinhuangdao, Huanghua and Tianjin)
in the North of the People’s Republic of China,
Qinhuangdao is mainly used for exporting coal
with an annual throughput of more than 200
millions tons. The coal is transported by railway
from the Northwest, where is situated a number
of large-scale coal resources, to the port on
the Chinese coast for export purposes, either
for being loaded into ocean-going vessels or
for being distributed for delivery to the South
of China. The new coal terminal. Qinhuangdao
Coal terminal Phase 5, built between 2004 and
2006 will have a handling capacity of up to 50
million tons of coal per annum.
Shiploader in loading position
The 2 shiploaders are executed as travelling type
machines with a luffing and slewing boom. The
boom conveyor is equipped with a shuttle head
which enables it to load ships on both sides of
the jetty. These machines with their rated loading
capacity of 8,000 t/h and their peak capacity of
up to 8,940 t/h are suited to load vessels from
35,000 up to 150,000 DWT.
They are equipped with portal travel gears, a
boom with shuttle head and a loading device with
trimming spoon, which allows slewing by +/- 180
degrees. Thanks to this option it is possible to
reach a homogenous filling of the corresponding
ship holds up to the uppermost edge, at a high
nominal loading capacity.

To serve the different sizes of ships, a shuttle with
rack and pinion drive, controlled by a frequency
converter, has been incorporated in the luffing
boom for varying the outreach from a minimum
of 18.8 m up to a maximum of 39.5 m.
To load the coal into ships on both sides of the
jetty, the slewing gear can rotate the boom from
one side to the other over a total range from
-125° to +125°.
As a modern drive control and PLC system have
been incorporated in the shiploaders, the operati-
on can be mainly controlled via the computerized
operator’s panel in the operator’s cabin. The high
degree of automation and the visually assisted
operator’s guide in Chinese allow the operating
staff to operate the machines easily and in a
comfortable fashion.
In the design of the shiploaders measures have
been taken for environmental protection to elimi-
nate dust and noise emission. These contribute
to the construction of a modern and seminal
handling plant.
