Zain Group (previously known as Mobile Telecommunication Company) is a leading pioneer

of telecommunications in the Middle East Africa (“MEA”) region. Zain Group established its
first presence in Kuwait, Kuwait City in 1983 (“Zain Kuwait”), where it was classified as
Kuwait’s first mobile operator.
In 2003, Zain Kuwait decided on expanding its presence amongst the Middle East where a
strategy was put in place and executed. The expansion strategy consisted of the acquisition of
several mobile operators. This resulted in a rapid expansion. Ever since, Zain Group founded
its presence in the Middle East in the following countries:

In 2008, Zain was rewarded as the fourth largest mobile operator in the world in terms
of geographical presence, as such, Zain Group had expanded by then to fifteen countries in Africa,
and seven countries in the Middle East.
Later from that year, Zain Group decided on leaving Africa where its 15 entities were acquired by
Bharti Airtel, as follows:

3. Organization culture

i. Overview

Zain Group’s organization culture is mainly based on diversity and inclusion. Zain
Group consists of a youth focused stream referred to as ‘Zain Youth’. The gender diversity
program was initiated by Zain Group in 2017. Ever since, their workforce includes a large
number of females which support the Group with its innovative thoughts and ideas.
Following the diversity initiative, Zain Group founded a women empowerment and
development program which had increased women’s leadership representation.

In addition, Zain Group focused on the inclusion of fresh graduates in its workstreams. As a
result, Generation Z program was kicked off by Zain Youth; Generation Z is a one
year graduate development program aimed at the development of leadership skills of
fresh graduates. The main aim behind this program is to cultivate the related skills and
behaviors in order to prepare the respective person enrolled within this program to take on
Zain Group’s big roles in the future.

ii. Evaluation

In my opinion, Zain Group is classified as one of the best and most effective companies out there; not
only that is a leading company in its industry, and that it being financially advanced, it empowers
females and believes in its youth.
Notwithstanding the above, Zain Group also participates in social causes and several activities with
the corporate social responsibilities sector.

iii. Recommendations

I would recommend that Zain Group continues to develop social initiatives and teamwork
activities within its organization. In addition, I would recommend that it founds a digital
competition amongst the MENA region to motivate the entrepreneurs and innovators.
Further to the above, it is highly recommended that Zain expands its focus to other regions
like the US and Europe.
It could also offer training services to other companies within its region provided that it is a
pioneer when it comes to leadership and teamworking skills.
