Codes are systems of signs, which create meaning. Codes can be divided

into two categories – technical and symbolic. Conventions are the generally

accepted ways of doing something. Codes and conventions are used together in any

study of genre – it is not enough to discuss a technical code used such as camera

work, without saying how it is conventionally used in a genre.

ABSTRACTION

Media codes and conventions are important parts of all the media around us.

Codes are signs that creates meaning. There are three types of media codes

1. symbolic codes

2. technical codes

3. written codes

Conventions are ways in which codes are arranged to form a product.

A. Symbolic Codes

13
Symbolic codes are social in nature. Meaning these codes live outside the

media product themselves, but can be understood in the same ways in the real life of

the viewers. For example, if you saw someone accept a flower in a movie, you would

undertake there is a romantic connection between the two persons. But, If you

offered someone a flower in real life, you will be expecting the same. Symbolic codes

in media include the following:

A.1 Setting

Setting is defined as the time and place of the narrative. When conversing setting,

you can label the setting of the whole story or just simply a specific part of the scene.

It can be as big as the space, or it can be as small as a exact room. Setting can be

created or just in a frame of your mind.

A.2 Mise en scene

Mise en scene is a French term meaning “everything within the frame”. It is the

picture of all the objects within a frame of the media product and how it is arranged.

Mise en scene includes:

 Set Design

 Costume

 Props

 Staging and Composition

A.3 Acting

Actors represent characters in media products and contribute to character progress,

making tension or progressing the narrative. The actor displays a character through:

 Facial look

 Body Language

 Vocal qualities

14
 Movement

 Body contact

A.4 Colour

Colour has extremely cultural and strong implications. When studying the use of

colour in a media product the different features to be considered are:

 Dominant colour

 Contrasting foils

 Colour symbolism

B. Technical Codes

Technical codes are codes that are exact to a media form and do not live

outside of them. For example, our perceptions of different camera shots and their

meanings make sense when we look and films and photographs, but mean nothing

to us outside of those forms. Technical codes in media include Camerawork, Editing,

Audio and Lighting.

B.1. Camerawork

Camerawork denotes to how the camera is operated, positioned and moved for

exact effects. Features of camerawork include:

 Positioning

 Movement

 Framing

 Exposure

 Lens choice

B.2. Editing

is done for four different reasons:

 Graphic edits

 Rhythmic edits

 Spacial edits

 Temporal edits

 Image for post

B.3 Audio

Audio is the open or naturalistic use of sound. Audio can be diegetic or non diegetic.

The features of audio are:

 dialogue

 sound effects

 music

 Image for post

B.4. Lighting

Lighting is the process of natural or artificial light to highlight specific elements of the

scene. Important elements of lighting include:

 Quality

 Direction

 Source

 Colour

 Image for post

16
C. Written Codes

Written codes are the prescribed written language used in a media product. It can be

used to advance a narrative, connect information about a character or issues and

themes in the media product.

Written codes comprise printed language which is text you can see within the frame

and how it is offered, and also spoken language, which includes dialogue and song

lyrics.

Conventions

Conventions are ways of using media codes. Conventions are connected to

the audience expectations of a media product. The following are types of

conventions:

1. Form conventions

Form conventions are the certain ways we expect types of media’s codes to be

arranged. For example would be continuity editing. Most video forms follow a set of

editing rules and techniques called continuity editing that permits for the audience to

easily comprehend what is going on in a scene and who is talking to who.

2. Story Conventions

Story conventions are usually common narrative structures and understandings that

are common in story telling media products. Examples of story conventions include:

 Narrative structures

 Cause and effect

 Character construction
