Assignment#5: Flat Slab, Ribbed slab, STM, DEEP beam, Corbel (25-Marks)
Date of assignment: 10th Aug, 2020 Submission date: 7th Sept, 2020

1. An interior panel of flat slab with panel size 6mX6m, supported by columns of
500mmX500mm. Provide suitable drop. Take live load as 4kN/m2. Use M20 and Fe415
Steel. (Design and show rebar detailing at sections of column and middle strip)
2. Design and sketch Flat slab of Q.N.1, providing a suitable column head, if columns are 500
mm diameter.

3. Design and sketch an interior panel of grid slab of size 7.5 m X 7.5 m, for a live load of 3
kN/m2, and floor finishing of 1kN/m2. The material to be used is M20 concrete and Fe415
steel, show detailing at important sections.

4. Explain about Strut and Tie Model (STM), with its basic approach, assumptions and
illustrate its applications in the solution of real field problems. (Hint: take reference of ACI
318 and just explain basic things as learner)

5. A powerhouse in a hydropower plant requires an overhead crane that is supported on the

crane beams on two ends. The crane beams run along the length of the powerhouse are
supported on a number of corbels projected inwards from the powerhouse columns. For a
rectangular column size 400mm by 550mm ( 400 mm along the length of the powerhouse),
design a corbel if the unfactored load on the corbel from the crane beam is 400 kN and it
acts at a distance of 200 mm from the inner face of the column. Assume M20 grade
concrete and Fe415 rebar. Provide a sketch clearly showing the reinforcement details.

6. Design Q.N.5, with consideration of 30 kN horizontal reaction on corbel at bearing point

(i.e. there is direct tension force of 30 kN on the bearing plate in addition )
(Assume necessary data as per requirement)

7. A deep beam of length 6000 mm, depth 2000 mm and width 450mm is acted by central load
(i.e. column of size 450mm X 450 mm transfers load of upper story in central part of the
deep beam) of 2000 kN, and transfers load to the columns at left and right end of the beam
(on which it is supported and size of both columns is 450mmX450mm). If concrete is M30
and steel is 415 MPa. Design and show rebar details of deep beam. ( as per ACI 318-14,
STM approach)

8. Simply Supported Deep Beam. A transfer girder 5.25 m length supports two columns
located at 1.75 m from each end. Column loads = 3750 kN. Total depth of the beam = 4.2m

and width of support = 520mm.Concrete Grade = M40, Fe 415 steel. Design and Detail the
girder. (Design as per IS 456:2000 recommendations)

Assignment#6: Yield line analysis (15-Marks)

Date of assignment: 10th Aug, 2020 Submission date: 7th Sept, 2020

1. Derive the relation, in case of orthotropic ally reinforced simply supported rectangular slab
subjected to udl of wu over entire surface.
𝑤𝑢 𝛼 2 𝐿2 2
𝑚𝑢 = [√3 + µ𝛼 2 − 𝛼 √µ]
24

Where, mu=yield moment across reinforcement in x-direction, µmu be moment across

reinforcement in y-direction, where L and αL are the typical slab side in long and short
directions.

2. A rectangular slab with 4m X 6m is S/S and is reinforced with 10 mm bar at 200 mm center
to center in short direction and 10 mm bar at 250 mm center to center in long direction.
Determine superimposed load the slab can carry safely. Assume M20 and Fe415, effective
depth 120 mm and overall depth of 150 mm. (Analyze using yield line approach)

3. Design isotropic ally reinforced square slab of 6 m to carry service load of 4 kN/m2, using
M20 and Fe415 steel.
