EDUCATION 472 STRATEGY INSTRUCTION LOG #2

DATE OF STRATEGY LESSON: October 24, 2019

TOPIC AREA: Motivatio n

GROUPING: Guided small group

STRATEGY USED: Three Stars and a Wish

RATIONALE: I used this strategy with three boys that I often work with who
struggle daily with behavior managem ent issues and self-estee m. I often witness
them arguing amongst one another, and they all seem like they have a hard time
lifting one another up in positive ways. I knew this strategy would be beneficia l as a
relationsh ip building strategy as well as a self esteem building strategy. These
students needed to learn to pick out the good in one another as well as see the good
in themselv es.

PA COMMON CORE STANDARDS (If applicab le): N/A

STEP-BY-STEP EXPLICIT DIRECTIONS PROVID ED TO STUDENT(S):

A. I modeled my own strengths on a star workshee t and modeled what I thought

I needed to work on in the shooting star.

B. Students will collabora te to write three of their own personal strengths on

three of the stars.

C. I went around the table and focused on one student at a time, asking what
the other two thought that student's strength was- I modeled a strength that
student had and that got the ball rolling for the other students.
1
• D. I then asked that student what he thought was one of his strengths and he
wrote it down.
E. Once all students had their strengths filled out, we went around the table
and I asked what they thought they could work on.

F. Each student wrote down one thing they thought they could work on in the
shooting star.
G. Once they were finished filling out the stars, they got to decorate each star
how they wanted to.

H. Once they were finished decorating, students were allowed to take their
pictures home to remember their strengths as well as what they need to work
on.

RESULTS OF THE STRATEGY: This strategy was very successful in my opinion.

At first, the boys did not want to cooperate, and one student was having issues with
his behavior while the other two hardly wanted to talk to me. By the end, I had
gotten each student to talk to me and even smile at their peers when they
complemented one another. I was proud of the students on how they cooperated
with me and began to uplift one another positively.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: I think that I handled the behavior issues well and
continued the strategy so that it would be successful. I am glad that I did not let the
behaviors going on hinder the way I perceived how the strategy was going to end. It
was important that I did not let my frustration get in the way and in the end, the
strategy as successful.
