PART–I: PHYSICS
This section contains 8 multiple choice questions. Each question has 4 choices
(A), (B), (C) and (D) out of which ONLY ONE is correct.
1. Two identical discs of same radius R are rotating about their axes in opposite
directions with the same constant angular speed ω . The discs are in the same
horizontal plane. At time t = 0, the points P and Q are facing each other as shown in
the figure. The relative speed between the two points P and Q is vr. In one time
period (T) of rotation of the discs, vr as a function of time is best represented by
Sol. (A)
At the moment shown, relative speed is zero. When these points reach the
diametrically opposite positions (E and F), relative speed is zero again. When the
points P and Q reach positions A and B (or C and D) respectively, the relative speed
becomes maximum.

floating vertically in water in half-submerged state. If ρc is the relative density of the
material of the shell with respect to water, then the correct statement is that the
shell is

7. Consider a disc rotating in the horizontal plane with a constant angular speed ω
about its centre O. The disc has a shaded region on one side of the diameter and an
unshaded region on the other side as shown in the figure. When the disc is in the
orientation as shown, two pebbles P and Q are simultaneously projected at an angle
towards R. The velocity of projection is in the y-z plane and is same for both pebbles
with respect to the disc. Assume that (i) they land back on the disc before the disc

Section II : Paragraph Type
Now consider two similar systems as shown in the figure: Case (a) the disc with its
face vertical and parallel to x-z plane; Case (b) the disc with its face making an angle
of 45° with x-y plane and its horizontal diameter parallel to x-axis. In both the cases,
the disc is welded at point P, and the systems are rotated with constant angular
speed ω about the z-axis.
9. Which of the following statements about the instantaneous axis (passing through the
centre of mass) is correct?
(A) It is vertical for both the cases (a) and (b)
(B) It is vertical for case (a); and is at 45° to the x-z plane and lies in the plane of
the disc for case (b).
(C) It is horizontal for case (a); and is at 45° to the x-z plane and is normal to the
plane of the disc for case (b).
(D) It is vertical for case (a); and is 45° to the x-z plane and is normal to the plane
of the disc for case (b).
Sol. (A)
In both the cases in one full revolution, the disc comes back to its original position.
So, the sense of rotation in both the cases is with respect to the vertical
instantaneous axis passing through the CM.
10. Which of the following statements regarding the angular speed about the
instantaneous axis (passing through the centre of mass) is correct?
The β decay process, discovered around 1900, is basically the decay of a neutron
(n). In the laboratory, a proton (p) and an electron (e–) are observed as the decay
products of the neutron. Therefore, considering the decay of a neutron as a two-
body decay process, it was predicted theoretically that the kinetic energy of the
electron should be a constant. But experimentally, it was observed that the electron
kinetic energy has continuous spectrum. Considering a three-body decay process, i.e
n → p + e− + νe , around 1930, Pauli explained the observed electron energy
spectrum. Assuming the anti-neutrino ( ν e ) to be mass less and possessing negligible
energy, and the neutron to be at rest, momentum and energy conservation
principles are applied. From this calculation, the maximum kinetic energy of the
electron is 0.8 × 106 eV. The kinetic energy carried by the proton is only the recoil
energy.
11. If the anti-neutrino had a mass of 3eV/c2 (where c is the speed of light) instead of
zero mass, what should be the range of the kinetic energy, K, of the electron?
(A) 0 ≤ K ≤ 0.8 × 106 eV (B) 3.0eV ≤ K ≤ 0.8 × 106 eV
(C) 3.0eV ≤ K < 0.8 × 106 eV (D) 0 ≤ K < 0.8 × 106 eV
Sol. (D)
K cannot be equal to 0.8 x 106 eV as anti-neutrino must also have some energy.
Most materials have the refractive index, n > 1. So, when a light ray from air enters
sin θ1 n2
a naturally occurring material, then by Snell’s law, = , it is understood that
sin θ2 n1
the refracted ray bends towards the normal. But it never emerges on the same side
of the normal as the incident ray. According to electromagnetism, the refractive
c
index of the medium is given by the relation n = = ± εr µr , where c is the speed
v
of electromagnetic waves in vacuum, v its speed in the medium, εr and µr are the
relative permittivity and permeability of the medium respectively.
In normal materials, both εr and µr , are positive, implying positive n for the
medium. When both εr and µr are negative, one must choose the negative root of n.
Such negative refractive index materials can now be artificially prepared and are
called meta-materials. They exhibit significantly different optical behavior, without
violating any physical laws. Since n is negative, it results in a change in the direction
of propagation of the refracted light. However, similar to normal materials, the
frequency of light remains unchanged upon refraction even in meta-materials.
13. For light incident from air on a meta-material, the appropriate ray diagram is
Sol. (C)
sin θ1
= nmeta
sin θ2
Since nmeta is negative, so LHS should be negative as well.
But θ1 is positive, so θ2 is negative.
Sol. (B)
Since the physics laws remain unchanged, the speed of light is lesser in meta-
materials.

A tangent PT is drawn to the circle x2 + y2 = 4 at the point P( 3,1) . A straight line L, perpendicular to
PT is a tangent to the circle (x -3)2 + y2 =1.
Sol. (A)
(A) x = 4 (B) y = 2
(C) x + 3y = 4 (D) x + 2 2y = 6
Sol. (D)
We have:

a−0 2
Point of intersection of direct common tangents is (6, 0)
So, let the equation of common tangent be
y - 0 = m(x - 6)
mx - y - 6m = 0
Since length of perpendicular dropped from centre = radius, we have:

Then
(A) both P and Q are true (B) P is true and Q is false
(C) P is false and Q is true (D) both P and Q are false
Sol. (C)
P:
f(x) + 2x = 2(1 + x2 )

(1 + x2 - 2x)sin2 x + 2x = x2 + 2
2x cos2 x = x2 cos2 x + cos2 x + 1
cos2 x(x2 − 2x + 1) + 1 = 0
(1 − x)2 cos2 x + 1 = 0
This cannot be possible.
Hence, statement P is false.

Let an denote the number of all n-digit positive integers formed by the digits 0, 1 or both such
that no consecutive digits in them are 0. Let bn = the number of such n-digit integers ending with
digit 1 and cn = the number of such n-digit integers ending with digit 0.
(A) 7 (B) 8
(C) 9 (D) 11
Sol. (B)
According to the given information, b6 contains 6 digits beginning and ending with 1.
If second digit from beginning is zero, third place can be filled up with 1 only. Then
fourth and fifth places can be filled up in three ways 0,1 or 1,0 or 11.
If second digit from beginning is 1 and third digit is zero, then there are two
possibilities 110 111, 111 0101.
If second digit from beginning is 1 and third digits is 1, then there are three
possibilities 111011, 111 101, 111111.
Hence, b6 = 8
54. Which of the following is correct?
Sol. (A)
an = an−1 + an−2
Similarly,
bn = bn−1 + bn−2 and cn = cn−1 + cn−2 for all n ≥ 3
Also, an = bn + cn for all n ≥ 1
∴ a1 = 1, a2 = 2, a3 = 3, a4 = 5, a5 = 8...
an is a fibonacci series. Hence, a17 = a16 + a15
b1 = 1,b2 = 1,b3 = 2,b4 = 3,b5 = 5...
c1 = 0, c2 = 1, c3 = 1, c4 = 2, c5 = 3...
Observe that bn−1 = cn for all n ≥ 2
