Description of the Lesson

Expressing fractions to decimals

and percent forms and vice versa .
3

What is fraction?decimal?percent?
FRACTION (Bacani and Soriano, 2017)
Is a part of a whole written in the form
𝑎
. The variable a above the fraction bar is
𝑏
called numerator. It tells how many parts of
the whole are being considered. On the
other hand, the variable b below the fraction
bar is called the denominator. It indicates into
how many equal parts a whole is divided.
The numerator and the denominator are
called the terms of a fraction.
4

DECIMAL Number (Bacani and Soriano, 2017)

Number in base 10 used to express any
value between two consecutive whole numbers;
or simply called a decimal.

PERCENT
The term percent means a
part in hundred, or a hundredth.
1. Changing fraction to decimal
To convert a fraction to a decimal,
divide the numerator by its
denominator.
6

𝟏
✘ EXAMPLE 1: Change to a decimal.
𝟒

1
Hence, = 0.25
4

Terminating decimals are

those numbers which come to
an end after few repetitions
after decimal point, just like the
given example.
7

𝟏
✘ EXAMPLE 2: Change to a decimal.
𝟏𝟐

The example shows a Repeating decimal,

this are also called a recurring decimal, is
a number whose decimal representation
eventually becomes periodic (i.e., the same
sequence of digits repeats indefinitely).

Vinculum a horizontal line drawn over a

group of terms in a mathematical
expression to indicate that they are to be
operated on as a single entity by the
preceding or following operator.

1
Hence, = 0.08333...
12 It can be written as 0.083
8

𝟐
✘ EXAMPLE 3: Change 2 to a decimal.
𝟓
✘ To convert a mixed number to a decimal, write first the mixed number as
a sum of a whole number and a fraction. Then convert the fraction as a
decimal. After that, add the resulting decimal to the whole number.
(Bacani and Soriano, 2017)

𝟐 𝟐 0 .4 𝟐
2𝟓 = 𝟐+𝟓
5 2.0 Hence, 2 = 2.4

2. Changing decimal to fraction
To convert a decimal to a fraction, consider first the place value of the rightmost digit in
the decimal. Use that place value to determine the denominator of the required fraction.
Then use the number formed by the first nonzero digit up to the last digit of the decimal as
the numerator of the fraction. Lastly reduce the resulting fraction in its lowest terms
whenever possible. (Bacani and Soriano, 2017)

✘ EXAMPLES: Expressing decimals as fractions

a. 0.5 b. 0.08 c. 2.625

We can reduce this fraction to
lowest terms by dividing both the
SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERS: numerator and denominator by 125.

Why divide by 125? 125 is the

5 5÷5 1
a. 0.5 = = =
Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) or
Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of
10 10 ÷ 5 2 the numbers 625 and 1000.

8 8÷4 2
b. 0.08 = = =
100 100 ÷ 4 25
625 625 ÷ 125 5
c. 2.625 = 2
1000
= 2
1000 ÷ 125
= 2

3. Changing percent to fraction
First, we need to write the percent as a fraction with a
denominator of 100. Then reduce the fraction in lowest term.
(Bacani and Soriano, 2017)
12

✘ EXAMPLE 1: Change 25% to a fraction.

25 25 ÷ 25 1
25% = = =
100 100 ÷ 25 4

✘ EXAMPLE 2: Change 12% to a fraction.

12 12 ÷ 4 3
12% = = =
100 100 ÷ 4 25
4. Changing fraction to percent
To convert a fraction to percent, divide the numerator by the
denominator. This will result in a decimal, which you can convert to a
percent by multiplying it by 100%. Note that multiplying a number by 100%
will not change its value because 100% is just the same as 1whole.
(Bacani and Soriano, 2017)
14

𝟑
✘ EXAMPLE 1: Write into percent.
𝟖

SOLUTION: Divide 3 by 8. Then multiply the result by 100%.

0.375 𝟑
Hence, = 0.375 × 100% = 37.5%
8 3.000 𝟖
-24
60 OTHER WAY!
- 56 After dividing the numerator by
40 the denominator, move the
- 40 decimal point two places to the
0 right and affix the percent sign.
3
= 0.375 = 37.5%

✘ EXAMPLE 2: Write 1 into percent.
𝟓
Change mixed number first into an improper fraction then
divide the numerator by its denominator.
3 8
SOLUTION: 1 =

1.6
5 8.0
-5
30
.

- 30
0
3
Hence,1 5 = 1.6 × 100% = = 160 %
5. Changing decimal to percent
To convert a decimal into a percent, move the decimal point two
places to the right, and then affix the percent sign. (Bacani and
Soriano, 2017)
17

✘ EXAMPLE 1: Expressing decimals as percent

a. 0.5 b. 0.25 c. 0.125

SOLUTIONS AND ANSWERS:

a. 0.5 = 0. 5 0 = 50%
a. 0.5 = 0. 5 0 = 50%

c. 0.125 = 0.1 2 5==12.5%
12.5%
c. 0.125 = 0.1 2 5 = 12.5%
6. Changing percent to decimal
When converting a percent to a decimal, get first its equivalent fraction.
Then change the resulting fraction into its equivalent decimal. For example,
12
12% = = 0.12
100

A shortcut to this process is to simply

drop the percent symbol, and then
move the decimal point two places to
the left. (Bacani and Soriano, 2017)
