 About the Handbook of TCM
Herbal Applications
This handbook was written by Master Zhengang Guo. Around the early 60’s in Lanzhou
City in China, Zhengang Guo’s father, Xiangli Guo, gathered his teenage sons and
daughters for their first of many classes on the foundations of traditional Chinese medical
theory. It was six generations earlier that the first Guo ancestor had practiced as a
traditional Chinese Medical doctor and herbalist. But Traditional Chinese Medicine itself
actually began over two thousand years ago, with the traditions and classic formulas it
perpetuates today.
A great deal has changed since that makeshift classroom in Lanzhou. Zhengang Guo
took his extensive knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine to Lanzhou Medical
College, where he trained as a Western surgeon and oncologist. For 17 years, Guo
practiced both Chinese and allopathic medicines throughout northwest China, from the
mountains near Tibet to the vast countryside to the city of Lanzhou. In the rural areas, he
would often treat upwards of 100 patients each day. Guo wanted to continue researching
traditional Chinese herbal medicine and finding ways to combine allopathic and
traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), so he came to the United States in 1981 as a
postdoctoral fellow at the M.D. Anderson Tumor Hospital in Houston, Texas, hoping to
integrate the best of Western science with the herbal medicine he had practiced for so
many years. He then moved to Chicago, where he conducted additional research at the
University of Illinois and started the first Chinese herbal class ever taught in Chicago.

Key points in using the handbook:

1. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic medicine. The basic philosophy of
TCM regards human beings and society as an inseparable part of the universe. We must
follow the rules of nature to survive and remain healthy. The best health condition is the

natural condition. So, the main principle of TCM is to restore, improve, and maintain the
natural health condition.
This philosophy and principle are very important. You must keep these in mind when
applying TCM.
It accounts for the major difference between TCM and other styles of medicine.
And it rules and guides the theory, diagnosis, treatment, and life style of TCM.
This may sound very simple, but it is very often and easily neglected or forgotten.
2. This handbook includes more than 500 formulas. The sources of these formulas are
very extensive. Some are TCM classic formulas, i.e. coming from “Shang Han Lun” and
“Jin Gui Yao Lue” which were published about 2000 years ago.
Some come from the works of famous TCM masters who lived in different ages or
dynasties over 2000 years in Chinese history.
Some come from TCM masters and practitioners of recent years, whether famous or not.
Some come from Master Guo’s family.
Some come from Master Guo’s experience and practice over more than 50 years.
3. We neither choose nor use those formulas in which some ingredients are illegal or
impractical, such as tiger bone, rhinoceros horn, and antelope horn; or too strong and
toxic, such as Tripterygium Root and Chinese stellera root or harmful heavy metals.
4. All these formulas do not include chemical drugs.
5. These formulas are effective if applied properly and correctly. There are over several
thousand herbal formulas published in over 2000 years for a variety of reasons
(conditions). We cannot use all of them. The formulas included in this handbook were
carefully selected, then modified and tested repeatedly to fit modern life style and health
conditions (over 30 years and 50 thousand patients, mainly in the U.S.A). This handbook
represents the culmination of that effort to improve safety, effectiveness, and
practicality.
6. These formulas are safe, especially when compared with some other therapies. Most of
the formulas have been used in Asia for hundreds or thousands of years and used in

America, Europe, Israel, and Africa by hundreds of practitioners for a couple of decades
without severe harmful results recorded or reported to date.
7. All these formulas have no side effects. If some negative reactions appear after
applying, they will disappear soon after discontinuing use. The reasons for such negative
reactions usually are improper usage of the formulas and failure to follow the indication
carefully. These kinds of reactions are basically different from so-called side effects.
8. No maintenance is needed. Again, the best health condition is the natural condition.
After returning to a natural health condition, only normal diet and lifestyle will be needed
to maintain the healthy condition.
9. Nearly all the formulas can be combined together as needed.
10. So far, there is no formal research or solid evidence showing these formulas will
interfere negatively with other medicine.
11. The available formulas are several hundred, but the issues and disorders are many
thousands, and as uniquely different as every individual. Therefore, the health conditions
we have to face and deal with are countless. How to help unlimited health issues with a
very limited number of formulas is the main purpose of this handbook.
Some conditions are common and simple in TCM diagnosis and usually only one formula
is enough, but most conditions are complicated, and a combination of two or more
formulas is needed.
12. The conditions listed in this handbook are those commonly seen in practice. It is
impossible to list all the conditions. For more complicated and rarely seen conditions, try
to combine different formulas based on the major symptoms and TCM differential
diagnosis. Usually, you can find a solution for most of these cases.
13. Keep searching and practicing, this is the best and only way to reach the goal.
14. For patients, with very complicated, severe, and critical conditions, consult with your
practitioners or specialists.

larger, more raised and often with small pus pockets
on the head. The skin around the pimples can become
red and swollen. Along with new break outs, old pimples
gradually shrink and leave small scars and pits, causing
the affected area to resemble orange skin. The pimples

also can become painful and often spread to the back
and chest. The person with such conditions easily feels
hot, has constipation with a red face, red tongue, yellow
tongue coating, strong fast pulse, and also easily develops
boils, abscesses and other kinds of infection, like sinus,
ear, gallbladder urinary tract, etc.
In TCM: Toxic Heat
-if the pimples are large, red, oozy, and keep getting ACLEAN plus DHT or DHT-2
worse, then, nodules and cysts will develop, along with or SKIN-W or XTSJ-SKIN
white heads and pus pockets. Facial skin becomes
red, oily, even bumpy, usually with foggy head, poor
concentration, food allergies, overweight, fatigue,
fungus, yeast infection, oily skin, skin warts or tags,
fatty tumor or cysts, etc.
-if the pimples become purple-red and painful, with add B-DS or HLX or B
purple tongue, lips and nails, or with dark purple patches
and spots on the tongue, lips and big ridges on the nails.

Bleeding
Bleeding is a common clinical symptom.
Sometimes bleeding is the only or main symptom or complaint.
In western medicine, it is difficult to find the mechanism and
cause of this kind of bleeding or to give a diagnosis.
Here we mainly talk about this type of bleeding.
Another type of bleeding is related to or is the result of other
disorders, such as infection, ulcer, tuberculosis, cancer, etc.

disease. But the treatments listed here are still helpful to
relieve bleeding, and improve the whole health condition.
Internal bleeding and bleeding caused by injury are not listed
here. We will mention them separately.
Nose Bleeding
Nose bleeding may be connected with many disorders and
diseases. Some are severe diseases, such as leukemia.
Nose bleeding can happen at the same time as other
bleeding, such as ear bleeding, vomiting blood etc. Here
only simple nose bleeding disorders are addressed.
-General: Balance cream (applying externally
only), or Balance cream plus QSHR
-During Cold-Wind style cold/flu, sometimes nose
bleeding occurs. If with no frequent nose bleeding
history, then this kind of nose bleeding is sign that the
External Pathogens would be released and expelled
through or from the nose bleeding. The cold/flu
would go away soon. This phenomenon is called
"Red-Sweating" in TCM and no treatment needed.
As with regular sweating, the external Wind-Cold
pathogens must be expelled. For this condition,
there is no need to treat the nose bleeding. It is only
necessary to treat the cold.
-if occurring during a Wind-Heat type of cold/flu, RG plus QSHR with dry cough, plus
with symptoms like fever, sweating, thirsty, dry or QCJF
burning nose, sore throat, cough with scanty phlegm,

In the early and middle stages, the Excess Heat and
Dampness are the main condition for Crohn's disease. After

Hypothyroidism
These years, this diagnosis is made mainly by lab tests or
only by the TSH, T3, T4 numbers, but the clinical complaints
and symptoms varies greatly. Sometimes the complaints and
symptoms even indicate hyperthyroidism. In TCM, the
treatment still is based on a differential diagnosis, not on the
allopathic diagnosis term and lab test numbers. Along with
the complaints and symptoms and general health improving,
the lab test numbers usually also improve, and eventually
will become normal.
The typical symptoms of hypothyroidism, like tiredness,
feeling cold, poor appetite, gaining weight, water retention
