Pre-Assessment for Math

The pre-assessment was given to the students on November 9th, 2020. The students

attend school online, so the assessment was given through a Google Form. All students were

given the assessment during their intervention time. The students were in the whole group and

completed it individually but as a class. I displayed the question on the screen and read it aloud

to the students. I answered any appropriate questions, like to reread the question. I explained to

the students that I want them to do their very best and to read the question carefully. I also took

the time to recommended the students use their whiteboard to work out their problem since this

is how the students will learn it during the lesson.

The pre-assessment given was asking the students to solve a simple, one-step

multiplication word problem. I decided to begin with one question because I did not want to

overwhelm them right at the beginning. The students were to solve on their whiteboard and

selected the correct answer. After submitting, the students did not receive any feedback because I

wanted to have the information or my eyes only. This is just a beginning assessment, so there

will be more assessments that will allow the students to understand their feedback and progress.

After analyzing the results, I found that 16 students understood the problem and were able to

correctly solve. Only 14 of the students did not understand the question or how to solve it fully.

Some students have beginning understands because I was able to see some of their white boards.

Many students just need more practice with multiplication and more teaching on how to solve

word problems. Only one student was absent, and she will take the pre-assessment if there is

time, if not, I will make sure to provide her with more small group practice with me to help her

understand anything she may have missed, and to help me have an idea of where she is at with

this skill.
