STRATEGIC BUSINESS ANALYSIS


ASSIGNMENT #1: Concept of Strategy

1. In relation to the four characteristics of successful


strategies in Figure 1.1, assess the US government's Middle
East strategy since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

To start this, we must know the four characteristics of successful strategies that was

posted in the NEU-VLE. The first one is goal focused, I think this characteristic is already

given to the business owners or entities in the world. If an entity doesn’t have any goals or

don’t have anything to achieve, they will not be successful and their business will just have

net loss in the financial statements. Having a goal in business will greatly influence the

outcome of your works in the business because it motivates you to achieve your goals and

will result to good outcome but it still depends on the other factors that will affect the entity

but setting a goal in your business will greatly have a difference. The next characteristic of

successful strategy that they know the environments within which they play and tend to be

fast learners in terms of recognizing the paths to advancement, this second characteristic is

also crucial for business owners, if a business don’t know what environment they are

competing with they would be overcome by their competitors that knows what

environment they are competing with. Having knowledge on the business type,

environment and form will give you an advantage to the competitors also, knowing the said

things are prerequisites in establishing a business. A person should know what environment
they are competing with in order to know what applications of marketing strategy,

segmentation and analysis to use. The next thing is the business should know their strengths

and weaknesses, analyzing these things will help you to improve the performance of your

business. Knowing these factors will help you formulate or prioritize which field you need

to excel more and what things you need to maintain in your company. For example, one of

your weaknesses is your business is not that popular, knowing that information will help

you in your decision making in your business, that said weakness will help you decide if

you need to have more attention in the marketing to boost your business popularity. Lastly,

businesses implement their career strategies with commitment, consistency and

determination. The career strategy needs to be consistent, have a commitment and

determination. If a person is going to run a business, they should be serious about it being

committed on what you are doing, having determination and applying consistent strategies

in your business will give you an assurance to have a successful business.

In the issue with United States

and Iraq I found out some information

that is relevant in to this. These are

power and security with natural

tendency to expand, have national

interest and oil capitalism. I think the

strategy of United States is too much,

using power to deprive the other

country is not good, also, using your

power for your sole advantage which


the scenario in the US is to gain oil for lesser to no price. Though I didn’t know the whole

story behind this also, there’s a bunch of resources in the internet that may result to bias

data.

2. What is your career strategy for the next five years? To what
extent does your strategy fit with your long‐term goals, the
characteristics of the external environment, and your own
strengths and weaknesses?

The data below came from my Forum #1 in NEU-VLE. One of my goal is to

become a CPA. I know when I became a CPA I will benefit from it in a long term basis.

Identifying the current strategy

To achieve one of my goals in life which is to be a CPA, I need to excel on my

academics so I can graduate on my major which is Accountancy. Graduate on the

accountancy program is one of the prerequisites of the BOA to take the CPALE. Also, the

burning desire of me being a CPA will be my fuel to achieve this dream.

Appraise performance

Being a BSA student is a very hard choice to make also to maintain. In the

Accountancy program, we have a quota grade that we need to maintain our performance to

stay on the program, by that, we should always be consistent from the beginning of our

year up to the last.


Diagnose Performance

The new normal that we have I feel not great on it. It seems that I'm not performing

well on it. I'm having a messy schedule that greatly affects my academic performance, in

addition, the courses that we have this semester are all majors except for the PE3. I think I

need to have a better day-to-day plan to get used on the new normal that we have.

Industry Analysis/Analysis of Resources and Capabilities

In terms of the current industry that our world has, the demand of CPA is very high.

By that information, it motivates me to become a CPA. In addition, the current resources

and capabilities of my parents are just enough to satisfy all of my school and personal

needs.

Formulate strategy

There are several things you can do as a student to

excel on your academics, just like, a proper study habit,

managing your time very well and etc. But there was this

vlogger that I always watch, he says on one of his vlog and became a remarkable line for

his viewers, he said a familiar term its the "law of attraction" which if you think something

that you can achieve it, you will, just think about it and work for it.

Implement Strategy

Implementing strategies on your goals might be hard from the start, but its just from

the start, if you do your first step already, everything will be easy for you after that. Just

keep on track every time and you/we will achieve our dreams.
3. The discussion of the evolution of business strategy (see the

section “From Corporate Planning to Strategic Management”)

established that the characteristics of a firm's strategic

plans and its strategic planning process are strongly

influenced by the volatility and unpredictability of its

external environment. On this basis, what differences would

you expect in the strategic plans and strategic planning

processes of Coca‐Cola Company and Spotify SA, the Swedish‐

based music streaming service?

In the topic from the NEU-VLE I was able to learn that companies should adapt

changes in the environments. They should welcome every change that are coming from the

external environment in order to their company or business to survive. Going back to the

NEU-VLE, I was able to learn that the transition of corporate plan to strategic management

is very crucial. The external environment is very unpredictable and having this strategic

management instead of using corporate planning will help you decide what things you

could do in order your business to survive.

Applying this scenario to the Coca-Cola, we all know this brand, it has many

competitors based on my readings, Coca-Cola invested and became consistent in their

performance compared to other competitors of it. In addition, they are able to cope up with

the opportunities and threats around them. Example is the emerging threat on sugar and

artificial sweeteners, they are able to cope up with that with the use of Costa Coffee.
Spotify has a very

unpredictable environment.

Nowadays, it has many competitors

just like Youtube Music and Apple

Music. As a business they must

think a way that they could generate

income but knowing that some of

the Spotify Application users are teenagers (which means they don’t have enough money

to pay for the subscription), they provided a free streaming in exchange of an advertisement

in a music. In my own experience before, listening to music with ads are very distracting

and uncomfortable to me, but I understand the management of Spotify, they are doing that

to generate income, if the users are not paying, they should get a benefit from they by

watching or listening the ads from other company/businesses, so the questions is how they

generate income from the users of the app that isn’t subscribed? They can generate income

to it because of the ads, those advertisement are paid. In addition to my own experience, I

now have a premium access to Spotify which I availed a 1-year subscription to the app,

even though its pricy, I know its worth it especially me that likes music so much.

I conclude that knowing the external changes and knowing you strength and

weaknesses will greatly improve the performance your business. Always be aware on the

environmental changes also, in addition, look for the users of your business in order to

cater them according to what they can provide.


4. I have noted that a firm's strategy can be described in terms

of the answers to two questions: “Where are we competing?”

and “How are we competing?” Applying these two questions,

provide a concise description of Lady Gaga's career strategy

(see Strategy Capsule 1.2).

- A lot of genre to cater, different people to please.

Lady Gaga is a famous songwriter, artist and actress. I think one of the differences

between Lady Gaga and her competitors in her genre is he goes on Movies. She has her

own movie (Born in the Star) she also does voice overs. And if ever Lady Gaga don’t want

to do music industry anymore she has her own business to suffice her need.

As a student, loving the genre of Pop I know her. She’s very optimistic, also her

genre is not just pure Pop it also mixes with Electronic music which gives a different beat

to her music and everyone loves that to her music’s.


5. Using the framework of Figure 1.6, describe the strategy of

the university or school you attend.

NEW REA UNIVERSITY

o Providing quality education to students.

o Providing quality facilities.

o Graduate students that are capable to pass the Licensure Exams to

increase the passing rate of the university.

STRATEGY AS DIRECTION (preparing for the future)

- What do we want to become?

o A world-class Institution of learning with a unique Christian culture of

excellence, discipline, and service to humanity.

- What do we want to achieve?

o Impart value-laden education to the total development of man.

o Offer curricula responsive to the needs of the time.

o Optimize learning through the adoption and utilization of appropriate

instructional methods and resources.


o Propel institutional development through the conduct of useful and

significant researches.

- How we will get there?

o Extend outreach services which promote self-help in the community.

o Promote access to non-conventional higher education and basic

education programs.

o Develop servant leaders among staff, faculty members, and

administrators.

o Produce God-fearing, competent, and disciplined graduates.

6. Your business school is considering appointing as dean

someone whose entire career has been spent in business

management. What challenges might the new dean face in

applying her strategic management skills to a business

school?

As a student and as a business major, I think the new appointed Dean that spent

much on a business management will be having a little to no problem in managing his or

her department. Working on a business management is like working in a school, you are

interacting with your employees which is same to students. The only different is the

students are not yet that professionals, the attitude, the knowledge and etc.

One of the challenges that I think that the new appointed Dean that will encounter

is some students are very techy and futuristic, maybe the appointed dean will be much older
compared to the age of the students so maybe the struggles of the students now will not be

appreciated by the new Dean.
