2. To study the difference between joint family and nuclear family on the personal growth
dimension.
3. To study the difference between joint family and nuclear family on the system and
maintenance dimension.
Hypothesis
HO: There is no significant difference on the personal growth dimension, between those
belonging to the joint and nuclear family system.
HA: There is a significant difference on the personal growth dimension, between those
belonging to the joint and nuclear family system.
In order to determine whether there is a significant difference between the mean scores of
the two independent groups on the three dimensions and to fulfil the overarching aim of the
study, the method decided for data evaluation included the t-test statistic, which would be carried
out using SPSS
Method
Research Design
To understand the social and environmental characteristics of the nuclear and joint
family environment and to explore the possible differences on key dimensions between the same,
it was decided that a cross-sectional, comparative study would be carried out using the Family
Environment Scale (FES), between two independent sample groups. One group would include
around fifty school-going, participants between the age group of 15-17, who are living in a joint
family, that includes their parents and grandparents while the other group would include
participants from a similar background and age range, who lived in a nuclear family that only
included their parents or siblings, in Delhi NCR.
Sample
The sample consisted of 35 female participants aged between 16-18 and living in Nuclear
Families and 35 females aged between 16-18 years, living in Joint Families. The participants
were selected using purposive or judgmental sampling.
