Q1 Test 1 Sem1 2012/2013
Figure Q1 shows a longitudinal spanning monolithic staircase with two flights.
Calculate and sketch the actions acting on the staircase (Flight 1 and Flight 2). State the
value of the actions. Then, determine and sketch the maximum moment and shear
force for the staircase (both flights). Design the staircases including both flights and
provide detailing.

Given the following data:

Going =275 mm
Riser =175 mm
Waist =200 mm
Finishes =1.2 kN/m2
Variable action =4.0 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete, fck =30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel, fyk =500 N/mm2
Nominal concrete cover =30 mm
Assume bar diameter =12 mm

Q2 Test 1 Sem2 2012/2013
Figure Q2 shows the plan layout of staircases (sections STR1 and STR2) at the first floor level of a hall. After the
first flight of the staircase (STR1), it breaks into two staircases (STR2) spanning on the right and left angle. The
staircases are supported by beams while a landing is shared at the intermediate stage a longitudinal spanning
monolithic staircase with two flights. The overall depth of landing and waist of the flight is 150 mm. Given the
following data:

Riser = 175 mm
Going = 250 mm
Finishes = 1.0 kN/m2
Variable action = 4.0 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete, fck = 30 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel reinforcement, fyk = 500 N/mm2
Nominal concrete cover = 30 mm
Assume bar diameter = 12 mm

a) By applying the beam size of 200x200 mm at

both ends, sketch the cross section X-X and Y-Y of
staircase STR1 and STR2 including the effective span of
the system.
(4 marks)

b) Calculate the design action and bending moment

of staircase STR1 and STR2 and draw the actions and the
maximum bending moment. State the important values.
(12 marks)

c) Design all reinforcements for staircase STR1 and STR2.

Provide the detailing of staircase.

Q3 Test 1 Sem1 2013/2014
Figure Q3 shows a detail and design of staircase for the
double story art gallery. The parallel flights are
supported by landings spanning perpendicular to the
flights. The flights of upward and downward directions
are separated by a void with width of 250 mm. The
staircase consists of 10 steps with overall depth of
landing and waist is 150 mm while the height of riser is
150 mm. Given the following data:
Characteristic of variable action = 4.0 kN/m2
Finishes and handrails = 1.2 kN/m2
Characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2
Characteristic strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Concrete cover to reinforcement = 25 mm
Diameter reinforcement = 12 mm

(a) Determine the design actions of the staircase.

Q4 Test 1 Sem2 2013/2014
A longitudinal straight reinforced concrete staircase supported by reinforced concrete beam at both ends is shown
in Figure Q4. The staircase is purposely to be designed for a private building. The flight of staircase consists of 12
steps with permanent and variable actions are 1.6kN/m2 and 3.5kN/m2 respectively. Given the following data:

Characteristic strength of concrete = 25 N/mm2

Characteristic strength of steel = 500 N/mm2
Unit weight of concrete = 25 kN/mm3
Nominal concrete cover = 25 mm
Beam size = 200 mm x 450 mm
Thickness of slab = 180 mm
Bar size = 10 mm

a) Describe the dimension specifications of riser and going for this type of staircase.
(4 marks)

(b) If minimum dimension of going is required for this

staircase, determine the size of riser and going.

(c) Design the main and secondary reinforcements for

the staircase.
