COGNITIVE PROCESSES OF LITERACY AND NUMERACY

Literacies Infographic Presentation

Due: Mid-Session 11 (Sunday)

Peer responses due end of session 11

Introduction
Scarborough (2001) created this powerful Reading Rope infographic to demonstrate the
integration of skills necessary to support skilled reading:

Scarborough, H. (2001) Connecting early language and literacy to later reading (dis)abilities: Evidence, theory and practice. In Newman, S, &
Dickinson, D. (Eds.), Handbook of early literacy research. (pp. 97-110). New York, NY: Guilford Press.

For this assignment, you will work in teams to create an 8-10 minute presentation about a
“composite” literacy: one that requires the integration of reading and math related skills.
You are not required to recreate the Reading Rope graphic itself (although you certainly can if
someone on your team has the artistic ability). As an alternative, a PowerPoint template that
graphically represents simpler components contributing to a more complex skill is provided. It is
not as aesthetically pleasing as the Reading Rope, but it is adequate for this assignment.

Directions

1. Refer to the Presentation rubric on the syllabus page so that you know the criteria for
how you will be evaluated.
2. Refer to the tutorial for creating effective online presentations (found in the
Presentations Options tab).
3. Download the PowerPoint Literacy Infographic Template.
4. Using the template, or your own approach, collaboratively produce a presentation* in
which you do the following (in this order):
a. Provide a title slide that names the composite literacy you have selected as your
focus.
b. Recreate an adaptation of the Reading Rope using the provided template
graphic, pasting the graphic above, or using a design your team creates. If you
think there are any other components you would like to add (e.g. basic biological
capacities that contribute to being able to read you may do that).
c. Conceive of and create a Math “Rope” using the provided template graphic or
another your team creates. In this graphic, identify the simple components that
are combined to allow for skilled math computations. Connect listed
components to specific research or practice-based knowledge sources.
d. Identify and, in your own words, define a composite literacy. If appropriate,
provide references for that definition.
e. Conceive and present a “Rope” depicting components that are combined to
produce skilled performance within that literacy.
f. Provide 3-4 key takeaways that emerged as your team collaborated on this
assignment.
5. By the middle of session 11, have one member of your team post your team’s
presentation to the Session 11 - Literacies Infographic discussion forum. Also submit
through the assignment submission link in the Team space.

You will be directed to individually review the other teams’ presentations.

*Note: All team members must contribute equitably to this assignment.

This assignment is worth 12 points.
