I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the students should be able to;


1. Identify claim and its types through critical reading of text.
2. List claims according to its types through critical reading from the different reading
material/article.
3. Collaborate with their classmates in harmonious group discussion.

A. Unlocking of difficulties
Instruction: supply the missing letters to complete the word.

B. Motivation

1. How many of you here know what debate is?
2. Have you try arguing with your classmates or friends?
3. How about reading an article or advertisements which encourage you to buy
or get something?
4. How about memos and letters that encourages you to do something?

C. Activity
Group activity (game)
Instruction: Teacher will group the students into five. The teacher will give each
group a flag that would serve as cue to answer the questions asked. Teacher will ask
the question, and the first group who will raise their flag first will answer the
question. After answering the question, they will identify the word from the
crossword. If they both answer the question and locate the word from the crossword,
the group will get 10 points. However, if they get the correct answer but fail to locate
the word in the crossword on the count of five, they will get only 5 points.

Claims
- It is any single statement of controversy advanced for the purpose of
argument.
- Main point, the thesis, the main controlling idea.
Types of claims
1. Claims of fact
-asserts that something has existed, does exist, or will exist. Debates
whether it is true or false.it can be an assertion of the past, present, or
future.
Ex.
Republican economic policies caused the Great Depression.
There is one god.
The Lakers will win the championship this year
2. Claims of value
-asserts judgment whether it is good or bad, more or less desirable. It is
claiming whether something is good or bad or the other thing is better than
the other one.
Ex.
The Hunger Games is the best movie this year.
Requiring community service in high school will produce more
community-aware graduates.
Yougartland is better than Pinkberry
3. Claims of policy
-an essay consisting of an argument that certain conditions should exist.
These essays advocate adoption of policies or courses of action because
problems have arisen that call for a solution.
Ex.
The death penalty should be abolished because it does nothing to prevent
murder
The age at which people can get a driver’s license must be raised to 18.
D. Analysis
1. What is claim? What are the tree types of claims?
2. What is claims of fact? Who can give example of claims of fact?
3. What is claims of value? Who can give an example of claims of value?
4. What is claims of policy? Who can give an example of claims of policy?
5. Does claim and its types only exist in a debate? How about other text type, like
articles?
6. Can we only see claims from the thing that we have read? In what way?

E. Abstraction
1. What is the relationship of critical reading to the claim and its type?
2. How important critical reading in understanding claim and its types?
3. How important claims and its type since we communicate every day?

F. Application
Instruction: on the same group, the teacher will provide an article regarding on the
current issue in the Philippines. The teacher will let the students read the articles
critically and let them list all claims that they may see according to its types. Each
group should choose at least two reporter to discuss their output in front.
