What do we need to live ?
FOOD

★ All animals (including

human beings) need
food to live and
grow.
★ Food gives energy to
do all the work.
★ Different animals
eat different types
of food.
WHICH OF THE FOODS MENTIONED ABOVE DO YOU THINK
THESE ANIMALS WOULD EAT?

FISH INSECTS GRASS VEGETABLES FRUITS VEGETABLES FRUITS

➢ Animals need food for their growth and also for the
energy to do all the work.
➢ They cannot prepare their own food.
➢ They either depend on the plants or other small animals
for their food.
FEEDING HABITS OF ANIMALS

According to the type of the food

that different animals eat or on the
basis of their feeding habits, animals
are classified into three types -

CARNIVORES

OMNIVORES
HERBIVORES
HERBIVORES – THE PLANT
EATING ANIMALS!

Animals that eat only plants or parts of plants

are known as plant eating animals or herbivores.

Examples-
Cow, buffalo,
rabbit, goat, sheep,
squirrel, etc.
CARNIVORES – THE FLESH
EATING ANIMALS!

Animals that eat only the flesh of other animals

are known as flesh eating animals or carnivores.

Examples-
Lion, tiger,
vulture,leopard,
etc.
OMNIVORES – THE FLESH AS WELL
AS THE PLANT EATING ANIMALS!

Animals that eat both the plants as well as the

flesh of other animals are known as omnivores.

Examples-
Human beings,
bear, crow, etc.
TEETH

plant leaves curved teeth

Since different animals eat different
types of food, they have different
mouth parts and ways of eating too!.

Here are some interesting ways in

which some animals eat their food:
CHEWING THE CUD

● Animals like cows, buffaloes and

some others swallow their food
without chewing it.
● Later, they bring it back to their
mouth and chew it properly.
● This is known as chewing the cud.
● Other animals that chew the cud
are camel, giraffe and sheep.
GNAWING THE FOOD

● Animals like squirrel, rabbit and

rat feed on the hard parts of
the plants(nuts, fruits, seeds).
● They have sharp and long front
teeth to nibble these hard
parts of the plants.
● This is called gnawing the food.
SWALLOWING THE FOOD

Animals like frog and earthworm do not

have teeth. So they swallow their food.
Frog has a long Snakes also swallow Earthworm
and sticky tongue their food as a swallows soil
for catching its whole as they do not containing dead
prey. have chewing teeth. plants and animals.
