JUSTIFICATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS


 Lecture: The lecture will provide students with a professional presentation and explanation of
CliftonStrengths presented by a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach: Dr. Shelly Bayer.
 Personal Assessment Activity: By completing the CliftonStrengths Assessment students will
discover their top five personal strengths. They will uncover both strengths and weaknesses of
their own personality types.
 Think-Pair-Share Discussion: The discussion will connect both the lecture content and
assessment activity. By answering the discussion questions with a partner, the student is able to
apply and share their learning to their own experiences.

PART I. INTRODUCTION
Welcome to another week of SPCM-492 Personality & Communication! This week we have guest
lecturer Dr. Shelly Bayer with us. She is a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach.

PART II. LECTURE | INTRODUCTION TO CLIFTONSTRENGTHS


Dr. Bayer shares brief introduction of CliftonStrengths, her own strengths, and the usefulness of the
assessment.

PART III. ACTIVITY | CLIFTONSTRENGTHS ASSESSMENT


Students complete the CliftonStrengths online assessment on laptops.

PART IV. DISCUSSION | THINK-PAIR-SHARE


1. Instructor pairs students.
2. Share your top 5 strengths with partner.
3. Answer the following discussion questions with your partner:
a. How might knowing your strengths allow you to succeed in your future career?
b. Knowing your bottom 5 strengths, what tactics could you use to improve in those
areas?
4. Each group shares responses with the large group.
5. Connect back to the role personality plays within communication as well as how
personality affects success within the workplace.

EVALUATIVE INSTRUMENT
Post-Application Activity Discussion Questions: Students understanding of the concepts will be
assessed through discussion post-application activity. Discussion responses will be assessed on the

understanding of the concepts.
