OYAYI: KONKRETONG DUYAN

Masasabi natin na a house is a place of rest and comfort. A place here your anxiety is enclosed with
privacy. A place here ‘you’ ca be ‘you’. Now what if you can attain utmost comfort na para bang
hinehele ka ng hangin habang nakahiga sa duyan, in your house. What if you get a feel of fresh
probinsya air in a suburban community? Then, let us present Oyayi: Konkretong Duyan.

Before we go to the house per se, let us talk about the site and the lot (kung pede ipresent yung sa
google maps or anything related sa lot). The site is a corner lot. Most people say that corner lots are
more expensive than normal lots because aside from access to two entryways, another one is the access
to air and light. (site analysis) The house’s orientation has access to prevailing winds from northeast. The
southwest winds cannot enter much because there are two-storey residential houses at those areas.
The lot on the west is another residential lot but is currently empty. (swot analysis) The swot analysis of
the site is as follows (di ko pa sure kung may explanation to):
Strength
• Safe Environment
• The location is accessible to the Commercial area, Supermarket, Hospitals, Schools, Police Office
and Churches.
• Corner lots provide more space for natural light and air circulation;
• Extend the feeling of openness to the exterior of the home.
• There’s no informal settlers near form the area
• Close to job opportunities
• Well trafficked location
Weakness
• The rapidly growing population has resulted in a congested urban core.
• Lack of treatment systems that increase the level of environmental stress and do not conform to
existing environmental guidelines which should be imposed.

Opportunity
• It will promote positive values, social responsibility, and environmental protection to the
subdivision by integrating social transformation of the housing.
• It can be sold in a reasonable price.

Threats
• Vulnerability to the natural elements – since the country as a whole is really prone to natural
disasters/calamities the extreme weather conditions which disrupt activities and brings about damage
to infrastructure utilities with each passing year.
• Aside from being a corner lot, the site is also located beside a vacant lot; making it vulnerable to
burglary
(site development) Now, we present to you the site development plan. The house is centered in the lot
with proper setbacks. A firewall with a green wall attached serves as a buffer to reduce noise from the
residential house at the back. Plants surround the house to attain fresh air, and water features are
found at the middle to let the air cool before entering the areas of the house.
(CONCEPT) (may mga ibang illustration akong sinned na pedeng gamitin ditto)
As aforementioned, this project aims to attain utmost comfortability for the users. Some other goals
include:
-Maximum utilization of natural light and ventilation (tropical design)
-Sustaining Energy
-Durability
With these goals in mind, the following are the considerations we thought through before designing
(may mga sinend silang logo):
-Energy Efficiency
-Distribution and Circulation
-Human Factors
-Light and Ventilation
-Orientation
-Environment
-Material

Oyayi. If you are not familiar with this, Oyayi have two meanings. It can both mean a cradle o duyan, and
a lullaby. See those meanings, what can you immediately feel? If you said sleep and/or rest, then you
are correct. We incorporated the feeling of being caressed by the wind when lying down and swinging in
the cradle. At the same time, since Oyayi is very calming, we tried to maximize fresh air and the rural
vibe. We also let maximum natural air and light enter the house to minimize the use of mechanical
ways. Aside from the feeling you get on an oyayi, we also incorporated its texture. Oyayis in the
province are mostly made of rattan (evolution of concept), its traditionally made that way. This nostalgic
texture of the oyayi is incorporated in many ways. (pede rin ipresent yung moodboard scratch) The
texture is both incorporated in the interior and exterior of the house. From furnitures, railings, to
accents. We incorporated it in moderation to not look overpowering since we opted for a rustic-
contemporary design style.

(DESIGN STYLE) (present na lang fnishes and some furniture)

Inspired by the OYAYI concept, the ideal style for the design it the combination of contemporary and
rustic style, creating a balance between comfortability and sophisticated. The mix of wood, stone and
white concrete produce a heart-warming, comforting yet clean and luxurious atmosphere that is
guaranteed to make a house worth living for an eternity while providing a sturdy, protecting home for
the family whom lives within. - The interior elements showcase the beauty of natural materials
collectively with the neutral color tones and large windows that aims to bring the outside in. The wood
flooring carried throughout the open plan unifies the spaces, the accent walls that brings attention to
the part of a room, creating an exciting and interesting flair to balance out the clean, modern furniture.

Tropical Architecture design factors are applied on the house’s design to attain our goals. In Tropical
Architecture, the orientation of the spaces must be given an utmost importance.
The overall u- shape form was utilized to maximize the cross ventilation. In this design, the living area
and master bedroom were strategically placed on the east side to the capture the glory of the morning
sun.
On the other hand, the west side were composed of the kitchen and service area to take advantage to
the heat of the afternoon sun to effortlessly kill the accumulated bacteria on these spaces.
In addition, the bedrooms were arranged in the corners to so that the windows were placed on the
opposite sides that allows cross ventilation.
At middle, the dining area and family area were positioned. The dining area was partnered with sliding
doors that directly opens to the two lanais. This allows the gatherings in the dining area to double
because the lanais were utilized as its extension.
In front of the lanai, is a water feature that introduces cool air to circulate inside the structure.
And, pivot doors on the second floor were used in contrast to the sliding doors below. This maximized
the airflow intake of the building as it were located on the north side.

(innovation) (present innov na lang)

These innovations aim to improve the lives of users in different aspects of their daily activities, from
performing as a life-long investment that could be at help for the financial state of the family, to
using spaces and make use of materials that are safe for the environment.
- First of all, considering that the project is located in a country that has tropical climate, we would
consider the elements like sunlight and rain. To utilize the nature’s “free” energy, solar panels are
widely used in the Philippines, the downside is that you need sunlight to store energy, while in the
country, raining season usually last for months, but recently there is a new inventions of a
Filipino MAPUA student called the AuREUS, which we can incorporate with the solar panel. The
AuREUS is a method of converting ultraviolet rays from the sky (which means even though it’s
cloudy we could still gain energy with this material) and transfer it to the solar panel. It is flexible
and sustainable for the environment since it was made the fluorescence properties of rotten crop.
- Next, for the rainy season, the rainwater harvesting system will help reduce the flood level in the
local area since it will be stored in the water tank, and also the home-owners can use the stored
water for their needs like watering the plants and washing vehicles. The water will be stored in a
sealed water drum to prevent the reproduction of mosquitoes which may cause dengue fever. The
harvesting system is displayed as a false column to conserve the surrounding landscape and the
building’s aesthetic.
- Lastly, we have the retractable roof placed at back lanai (which is at the west part of the lot) to
help reduce the harsh sunlight on the afternoon but the retractable utility helps the home owners
to enjoy the skylight whenever they prefer. And the retractable floor board for the front lanai to
cover up the linear depressed water feature to create extra space for events like party or family
gatherings.

(plants)
The last thing we would talk about is the factor that ties the vibe of this house altogether, plants. We
had picked some plants for the house. These plants are not only for aesthetics, most of them have
benefits.
The following plants are proven to purify air, removing them of toxins:
Areca Palms, Boston Fern, Peace Lily, Basil Plants, Spider Plants, Rubber Plant
The next set is said to improve and/or help lessen strains on your mental health:
Chrysanthemum, Peppermint Plants, Aloe Vera, herbs
These ones are the best ones to plant in a tropical setting:
Pitcher Plats, Cardboard Palms, Cacti/Succulents
This one plant can reduce flooding around the house:
Leopard Plant

With all these considerations, we had created a house. A concrete house that feels as soft as your bed. A
concrete house na kayang dalhin ng hangin sa sobrang gaan sa pakiramdam. A concrete house that
sways with you like a cradle. A house that chills you with a beautiful lullaby. A breath of fresh air. This
proposed two-storey residential house is not a house. It is a feeling; it is a vibe. This is Oyayi: Konkretong
Duyan. A house that will sung you a lullaby, any time of the day!
