Discussion Protocol Assignment
Class Lesson Topic: Biodiversity

The Purpose Behind Jigsaw Strategy:

Students have the opportunity to become an expert on a topic, collaborate, and then
create a presentation together. Jigsaws can be performed in several ways but for this
assignment the students will be broken into 6 groups, reading material individually then
discussing it in groups, and then sharing with the class. Students have the opportunity to work
on their own to become an expert on a topic and then collaborate with others to hear different
perspectives on the same topic and then present to the whole class together. This gives
students a common goal to work together toward. Jigsaw can be used to cover material in class,
as a lesson assignment, it can even be used as a formative or summative assessment.

Low-Preparation Discussion Strategy Materials:

● Reading material
● Poster paper
● Marker

Directions:
1. The teacher will number students off by 6. All number 1’s will read the first section of the
reading, 2’s second section of the reading, 3’s the third section of the reading, and so
on.
2. Students move into groups with their number groups. All of the 1’s sit together in a
group, all the 2’s sit together in a group, all of the 3’s sit together in a group, and so on.
3. When students are finished reading they will discuss what they learned and their
experiences with the topic.
4. Students will then use the poster paper to write down the main concepts, key terms, and
examples from their reading discussion.
5. Students will then choose a speaker to present the information they came up with as a
group.

Questions to ask:
1. What was your section about?
2. What were the main topics and key terms?
3. Can you connect to this information? how?

Closing Thoughts:
● As each group presents their information, this is the perfect time to open it up as a whole
class discussion.
● Class should have a chance to add to other group poster paper
