THIRD CONDITIONAL
1. Read this story and then complete the third conditional sentences. Write the
verbs in the correct form. Use negative forms if necessary.

TWO BANANAS AND A WEDDING


A boy was eating a banana as he was walking along the street. He threw the banana skin
away carelessly. An old man stepped on the skin and fell over. Immediately, Emma ran
to help him. “Are you all right?” she asked. “Yes, my dear” he replied. “You’ve been
very kind. I’d like to invite you for a dinner at my house.”
Next evening, Emma went to the old man’s home. It was a very large house. At dinner,
she met his son, David. “I should be in America,” explained David, “but my taxi broke
down and I missed the plane.”
Emma and David fell in love. David cancelled his plans to go to America and stayed in
Britain with Emma. Six months later, they got married. It was a very big wedding as
David’s father was very rich. While they were driving away from the church, Emma
looked out of the car window. She saw a boy waking along the street. He was eating a
banana. When she saw that, she recognized him. She asked the driver to stop the car.
Then, dressed in her white wedding dress, she ran to the boy and kissed him. “Thank
you,” she said. “What????” said the boy.

If Sharon hadn´t lost her ticket she would have won the lottery.
6. Debbie had an important exam, so she didn’t go out last week.
Debbie would have gone out this weekend if she hadn´t had a important exam.
7. Pete won the tennis championship because he had practiced every day.
If Pete hadn´t practiced every day He wouldn´t have won the tennis championship.
8. The police arrested Harry. He hadn’t cleaned his fingerprints off the gun.
Harry would have been innocent if he had cleaned his fingerprints off the gun.
9. Nick ate a lot of sweet things, so he had to go to the dentist.
If Nick hadn´t eaten a lot of sweet things he wouldn´t have gone to the dentist.
10. She studied very hard, so she passed the exam.
She wouldn´t have pass her exam if she hadn´t studied very hard.
11. Jill lost her job because she quarreled with the boss.
If Jill hadn´t quarreled with the boss, she would have been working.
12. Roger didn’t wear his seatbelt, so he was badly injured.
Roger would have been with his arm if he had used the seatbelt.
13. Myra got a part in the film because the director fell in love with her.
If the director hadn´t fallen in love with Myra she would have been filming.

3. Now write your own third conditional sentences.


 If I hadn´t studied hard, I wouldn´t have approved the admission exam.
 If she hadn’t lost her lottery ticket, she would have won a million dollars.
 Marcelo would have forgotten the concert, if you hadn´t called him.
 If the Covid-19 hadn´t existed, I would have gone to Guns and Roses concert.
