Worksheet: Water of Crystallisation Name

1. 4.96 g of a hydrated sodium thiosulfate (Na2S2O3.xH2O) were dehydrated and

formed 3.16 g of anhydrous salt. Find the value of x.

2. Strontium chloride is a compound used to give a bright red colour to fireworks.

The crystals contain water of crystallisation. A student did an experiment to find
out the exact formula for strontium chloride, SrCl 2.xH2O, and recorded the results
shown. From these, calculate the value of x.
Mass of crucible and lid used 22.42 g

Mass of crucible, lid and hydrated 25.64 g

strontium chloride
Mass of crucible, lid and strontium 24.56 g
chloride after heating and cooling once

Suggest what should have been done to improve the validity of this experiment
and hence gaining the correct value for x, which should be 6.
