Domestic violence, I narrowed it down by reading the article of mona eltahawy.


● The short story sweat revolves around the life of a black married couple. Delia Jones and
her husband Sykes have been married for fifteen years. Through the contextual
evidence provided by the text, the reader realizes that Skye is an abusive husband, who
started to abuse her wife Delia only two months after their marriage. After the
consistent abuse Delia had to take for fifteen years, she decided to step up for herself,
and do something about the ongoing abuse.

● This non- literary body of work mentions women’s oppression in Arab countries, and
how it is time to put a stop on these oppressions and harassment to.

● This extract revolved round the main theme of domestic violence. This extract states
that in Egypt, men can get away with extremely beating their wifes if they did it with
“good intentions.” This is horrible and terrifying, women shouldn’t get beat up under
any circumstance.
● They both show signs of domestic violence performed from people who have power
over them. They both stand up for themselves to show power back. One in a violent
way, and another one by spreading her voice for other females to listen
● 1. Women that are inflicted with domestic violence are the most likely able to deal or

This shows how she was able to deal with the death of her husband with extreme
tranquility. This shows how due to the domestic violence she went through her whole
life, she was able to be the bigger person and deal with pain.
The snake seemed to wake up under the stove and Sykes made a quick leap into the bedroom.
In spite of the gin he had had, his head was clearing now. "'Mah Gawd!...also.”
This extract displays Delia’s strategic plan for killing her husband. Delia decided to kill her
husband because she was tired of the domestic abuse inflicted upon her. This extract reveals
her exposure to domestic violence led to her killing her husband.

● 2. Women tend to stay married/in couples with their husbands for a long time before
stepping up to domestic violence.

This shows that the woman was domestically abused, and didn’t do anything about it. She just
waited until he died, this shows that usually, women are scared to step up.
● Domestic violence matters because it is popular around the world. People are scared to
stand up for themselves because they fear something will happen to them. Brave people
encourage them to show their inner hidden strengths to perceive the world in a better
and different way.
