The arts have always been essential to our world. They have the ability to
cross borders, speak a universal language and connect humankind.
Whether it is drama, art or music, the fine arts have been vital
in adding to the richness of our history.
Regardless of ethnicity, gender or age, the arts are our common
ground and continue to surpass generations.
The arts are how we share and remember stories, how we
express feelings and how we work through our experiences.
In an educational setting, fine arts assist in cognitive development, growth
in fine motor skills, language comprehension and communication.
When COVID-19 reached a global scale this past March, humankind
experienced a societal "shut-down" and extended periods of isolation
like no one this age has before.
Museums, galleries and concert halls have experienced significant
restrictions and closures in order to help reduce the spread of the virus.
Schools have gone above and
beyond to ensure students can
still experience the benefits and
social connection fostered by
fine arts activities.
This time we have spent in isolation has been trying on
mental health to say the least.
We have needed to find ways to cope with the isolation. The arts have
helped keep us sane while we strive to keep people safe.
People have experienced trauma
related to COVID-19 in many ways
during these past eight months.
Arts will be a significant tool as people process their thoughts and
experiences that have resulted from this pandemic.
The arts will also be a significant medium in how we retell our
stories and record the history of 2020.
Re-building in a post-COVID world is going to need creative
minds more than ever.
Fine arts in our schools invite us to envision a future full of
healthy expression, creative problem-solving and many
beautiful perspectives.
