MOTIVATION PART
Let’s continue exploring this episode through the amazing story of Super
K.

Slide 6
One day, Super K decided to buy a gift for his mom’s birthday. He
wanted to surprise her mom with the floral dress he saw in an online
shop. The dress cost Php 150 with a shipping fee of Php 50. All in all, he
needed Php 200. At that moment, knowing he could not have any budget
to use to buy the dress, he temporarily added the order to his cart. From
then on, Super K planned to save Php 20 every day from his allowance.
Then, one time, he asked himself when could he have enough budget to
check out for his order. Now, let’s help Super K track his future savings.

5 Php ___

Day 1: His total savings is Php 20

Day 2: His total savings is Php 40 pesos.
On the 3rd day, how much will be his total savings?
Correct. Php 60
On the 4th day?
Very good, He will have a total of Php 80
And on the fifth day, His total savings will be ___...

Excellent! Php 100. But wait, until when can Super K afford to buy the
floral dress for his mom?
That is our mission as we go through the next part of this episode.

DISCUSSION PART
SEGMENT HOST

Let us observe the five-day savings of Super K.

Slide 8 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

Do you see any pattern?____Yes. And what is the pattern?

I also agree on that. We can see that each term after the first is obtained
by adding 20.

How about this?

Slide 9
3, 7, 11, 15, 19

What pattern do you see?____

Exactly! Each term after the first is obtained by adding 4.

Next,

Slide 10 10, 8, 6, 4, 2

Can you tell me the pattern?

That’s right! Each term after the first is obtained by subtracting 2.

And now, let’s go back with the five-day savings of Super K.

Slide 11 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

This set of numbers that has a definite pattern is an example of a number

sequence or simply a sequence.

And what is a sequence?

Mathematically, a sequence is a function whose domain is the finite set
{1, 2, 3,…n} or the infinite set {1, 2, 3, …}.
We say that a sequence is finite if we can determine the total number of
terms in a given set. Usually, the last term is given. Take a look at this
example

Slide 12 {3, 5, 7, 9, 11}

There are 5 terms in the set and the last term is 11. Therefore, this is a
finite set.

We say that a sequence is infinite when it is impossible to count all the

terms included in a set. Infinite sequence uses a symbol called ellipsis,
these are the three consecutive dots to indicate that there is an infinite
number of terms . For example,
Slide 13 1, 7, 13, 19, 25, …

In this given sequence, the first term is 1 and the fifth term is 25. And 25
is not the last term. Because of the ellipsis, the sequence doesn’t stop at
25. Therefore, we don’t know yet where this sequence will stop.

Let us analyze the finite sequence

Slide 14 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

Slide 15 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

a1= first term
a2 = second term
a3 = third term
a4 = fourth term
a5 = fifth term

4|DEP ED REGION 3: NAME OF INSTITUTION

PROGRAM TITLE: TELESKWELA EPISODE WRITER:
NORMAN L. SANTOS
EPISODE TITLE: GENERATING PATTERNS
EPISODE DIRECTOR: JOEY TING
AND ILLUSTRATING AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE

This sequence has five terms. We use a1 to denote the first term, a2 the
second term, a3 the third term, a4 the fourth term and a5 the fifth term.

Slide 16 a1=20
a2= 40
a3= 60
a4= 80
a5= 100

From the given sequence, a1 is 20, a2 is 40, a3 is 60, a4 is 80 and a5 is 100.

We can also generate patterns by stating a rule or nth term. Let us use
again the sequence

Slide 17 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

We can use the rule or nth term

Slide 18 an=20n

an equals 20n to get the first five terms of the sequence, where a n is the
nth term and n is the position of the term. Just like this

Slide 19
a1 = 20(1) = 20
a2 = 20(2) = 40
a3 = 20(3)=60
a4 = 20(4) = 80
a5 = 20(5)= 100

a sub 1 equals 20, times 1 equals 20. A sub 2 equals 20, times 2 equals
40. A sub 3 equals 20, times 3 equals 60. A sub 4 equals 20, times 4
equals 80. And a sub 5 equals 20, times 5 equals 100.

Therefore, the first five terms are

Slide 20 20, 40, 60, 80, 100.

We are still on the journey of Super K to save money for his mom’s
birthday. We will use the pattern of his five-day savings to illustrate an
arithmetic sequence.

What is an arithmetic sequence?

5|DEP ED REGION 3: NAME OF INSTITUTION

PROGRAM TITLE: TELESKWELA EPISODE WRITER:
NORMAN L. SANTOS
EPISODE TITLE: GENERATING PATTERNS
EPISODE DIRECTOR: JOEY TING
AND ILLUSTRATING AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
Slide 21 Arithmetic sequence is a sequence
where each term after the first is obtained by
adding a constant called common difference.

We define arithmetic sequence as a sequence where each term after the

first is obtained by adding a constant called common difference.

In the sequence

Slide 22 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

the pattern is by adding 20 from the previous term to get the next term.
And 20 here is constant or unchangeable. It is a fixed value that is added
to each term after the first.

This constant 20 is what we call common difference

Slide 23 common difference.

To get the common difference in any arithmetic sequence, take any

number in the sequence and subtract it by the previous term. Let’s look at
this given illustration.
Again the sequence is

Slide 24 20, 40, 60, 80, 100

If I take 40 and subtract it by the previous term 20, the result is 20. This
is true to the following differences like

Slide 25 60 – 40 = 20
80 – 60 = 20
100 – 80 = 20

60 minus 40 equals 20, 80 minus 60 equals 20, and 100 minus 80 equals
20.
In arithmetic sequence, we add the same value or constant from the
previous term to get the next term. Can you follow? We are getting
closer to the finish line to help Super K track his savings up to the last
day when he can save enough money to buy the floral dress for his mom.

Don’t go away, we will be right back after a short break.

TRIVIA PART

Did you know that patterns and arithmetic sequences can be seen in

Slide 26 nature and events

in our surroundings?
These patterns can be modelled mathematically and they include

Slide 26 (Pictures of symmetries, spirals, waves,

tessellations, stripes)

symmetries, spirals, waves, tessellations and stripes among others.

Likewise, we can see real-life situations that involve arithmetic
sequence.
We can apply arithmetic sequence in saving money just like the story of
Super K,

Slide 27 (Pictures of finding interest, population growth,

distance problems)

finding interest, population growth, distance problems and many more.

One of the most current situations in

relation to pattern is the estimation of the University of the Philippines
about Covid -19

The university has estimated a total number of

Slide 28 90,000 COVID-19 positive cases before July

2020 ends.

And this made possible by studying the pattern.

APPLICATION PART

We are back Super K Teens. And you are still watching Super K
Tele…..skwela

Let us continue the mission of Super K. On what day can he afford to

buy the floral dress for his mom’s birthday? Super K needs a total of Php
200 savings. Let’s analyze this table

Slide 29

Day Total Savings

1 Php 20
2 Php 40
3 Php 60
4 Php 80
5 Php 100
6 Php 120
7 Php 140
8 Php 160
9 Php 180
10 Php 200
Super K started at Php 20. Each day another Php 20 is being added to his
savings, which is the common difference of the sequence. And when the
pattern continues, it reached 10th day to save Php 200. Just enough for
Super K to buy the floral dress for his mom’s birthday.
Mission accomplished!

This time, let’s have another activity to test your understanding about our
lesson.

Tell whether the following describes a pattern. If it has a pattern, identify

if it is an arithmetic sequence or not an arithmetic sequence. Can you
follow? Let’s start with the first set of numbers

Slide 30 1. 9, 18, 27, 36, 45,..

Does it have a pattern?

Correct! It has a pattern. Each term after the first is obtained by adding 9
Is it an arithmetic sequence or not?
Very good! It is an arithmetic sequence since there is a common
difference 9

Next

Slide 31 2. 24, 19, 14, 9, 4

With or without a pattern?

8|DEP ED REGION 3: NAME OF INSTITUTION

PROGRAM TITLE: TELESKWELA EPISODE WRITER:
NORMAN L. SANTOS
EPISODE TITLE: GENERATING PATTERNS
EPISODE DIRECTOR: JOEY TING
AND ILLUSTRATING AN ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
Yes. It definitely has a pattern. Each term after the first is obtained by
subtracting 5.
Is it an arithmetic sequence or not?___
Yes! It is an arithmetic sequence because of the common difference -5.

Third set of numbers

Slide 32 3. 3, 7, 10, 14, 15, 21

Does it have a pattern?

You got it right! It doesn’t have any pattern.
So we cannot consider this an arithmetic sequence.

Moving on to the next set of numbers

Slide 33 4. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32

With or without a pattern?

Exactly! It has a pattern.
We get the next term by multiplying 2.
Is it an arithmetic sequence or not?___
Excellent! This is not an arithmetic sequence because it does not have a
common difference.

Congratulations for passing the activities regarding generating patterns

and illustrating an arithmetic sequence! I am sure you’ve learned a lot in
this episode.

GENERALIZATION PART

Now, your turn to generate your own pattern and give at least five terms
satisfying the pattern. Then, identify if it is an arithmetic sequence or not.
I will give you time to write your answers.

Alright. I hope you were able to generate pattern and illustrate an

arithmetic sequence by this time. We will have the assessment part of
this episode right after this break.
