Important Information for Upgrading Firmware from VR1.x to VR2.x and Downgrading from
VR2.x to VR1.x

When Upgrading or Downgrading firmware it is recommended to perform a backup of user

data first. Instructions are included in this document.

Upgrading:

When upgrading firmware from VR1.x to VR2 (006.1xxxy):

• OOBE is not reset, but you will see a date and time screen at 1st bootup.
• Printer configuration settings, usage counters, etc., are retained.

When upgrading within the same major revision (VR2.y -> VR2.z):
• There will be no special screen at 1st bootup (such as date and time).
• Printer configuration settings, usage counters, etc., are retained.

Downgrading:
(Note – HP does not recommend downgrading from VR2.x back to VR1.x. If it is
necessary to downgrade, the following information is important to understand
(particularly the Cold Reset which includes page usage counts used in contractual
printing).
When downgrading firmware from VR2 back to VR1:

• Device will reboot. During Reboot, a Cold Reset* is performed. When device powers up, you
will see an OOBE prompt and the printer will go through a purge-less OOBE:
• Prompt for Language
• Prompt for Country
• Prompt for date/time
• Prompt for Printer-Based Usage Tracking opt-in
• Run OOBE calibrations (will not run purge)
• Accept either SETUP or Trade supplies
• Have a single entry in the Event Log: "Cold reset completed" (event code
32.21.11)

*Cold Reset does the following:

• Restores Factory Defaults
• Resets configuration settings
• Clears admin password
• Clears Customer information (e.g. address book)

Note: Engine Page count and life counters should not be affected in the downgrade
scenario.
Perform an EWS Backup of User Data:
a. Access the EWS of the device via it’s IP Address
b. Go to the “Tools” Tab

c. Click “Backup and Restore”

d. Click “Backup”

e. Click “OK” on the “Redirect to Secure Page” dialog

f. In the browser continue to the website when prompted about the security certificate
g. Make sure all the settings are selected

h. Set a password if required

i. Click “Save”
j. It will then create the file

k. The browser will then prompt you to save the file

i. Userdata.enc
l. Save the file to a convenient location on your PC in case it is needed later for a restore
after the FW update
