CASE STUDY

1. Well we are all aware I think about the differences between leading and managing
people and in the case of Ernie, yes he is a good leader but I think the reason why he is
not very successful in his current job position is maybe because leading an state
university (past job) is not the same as managing a whole council even he has the power
to do so, he somehow failed to build relationship between him and his subordinates
that’s why he also failed to increase the number of active members in their organization
and it is one of his weak point. He may be good in leading people but not so good in
managing them. Ernie has the power but he don’t have the enough courage to exercise
it, how can he able to gain the trust of his people, right?

2. We all know that the main concern of Ernie here is to influence his people to behave as
he wants them. And also, he did not try to make some move to approach his members
given that he is new to them, of course you need take some actions to get them and be
friend with them. Ernie can also use the reward power of a leader wherein it emanates
from one’s ability to grant rewards to those who comply with a command or request. A
leader’s capacity to provide rewards can influence the behavior of his subordinate.
Another is the use of his coercive power wherein his subordinates will be punished if
they will not conform to the wishes of the leader. These actions are considered as the
power of a leader. It may look like as an advantage for Ernie in some point but it is really
an act of his responsibility as their leader.
