PROBLEM 1
An accounting office 50 feet by 70 feet is to be illuminated. The ceiling is 10ft high and the
lighting fixtures are to be surface mounted. The walls and ceiling are painted white.
1. Specify the type and number of fixtures you will use.

SINGLE FIXTURE

50ft= 15.24m
70ft= 21.336m
10ft= 3.048m
hc =.08m ; where: hc= height of ceiling to floor
(Assume 1m height of working plane to floor)
So, hcw = 3.048m- 1m= 2.048m; where hcw = height of ceiling to working plane

Cross Sectional Area= 15.24m X 21.336m = 325.16m²

ROOM INDEX (R.I.) = where l= length, b= width
hcw(l x b)

15.24 x 21.336

2.048(15.24+21.336)
= 4.34
Lumen Required= 325.16m² x 500 = 162,580 lm
For R.I = 4.34 and reflectance code = 752, Utilization Factor = 0.83
For classroom/office maintenance factor= 0.8 (standard)

No. of fixtures to use = 60 fixtures

Where:
N= number of luminaire required for a given area
E= Average luminance over the horizontal working plane
n= Number of lamps in each luminaire
F= lighting design lumens per lamp, i.e. initial bare lamp luminous flux
UF= utilization factor for the horizontal working plane
M.F.= Maintenance Factor

Use PHILIPS CORELINE LED Batten of 38W

Lumen/Watt: 4100 lm/ 38W

2. Specify the arrangement of the fixtures.

N= 60/10 = 6 fixtures in each row

3. Give size of the feeder conductor to the area.

Total Watt= No. of fixture use x watt/fixture

= 60 x 38 = 2280 watts

Compute for the lighting load:

2280 watts

PROBLEM 2
A first class 10 door apartment has a floor area of 80 square meter for the ground floor
and 70 sq. meter for the second floor. The following load should be provided by an outlet.
1 -8 kVA Electric Range
2-2.5 KVa Water Heater
2-6A Air Condition Unit
2- CO’s at 1500VA
Provide the complete power distribution for the said apartment

A. Design Analysis for

1. Computed Load using Floor Area Method

GENERAL LIGHTING LOAD

Total Floor Area = 150 square meter
Table 2.20.2.3 General Lighting Loads by Occupancy
(Note: Actual computed lighting load shall be used if the total volt-ampere exceeds
that obtain from Table 2.20.2.3 a per square meter method)
For 10 door apartment load the requirement is 16 VA per square meter.
For total floor area of 200 square meter
150 square meter × 16 VA/sq. m = 2400VA
2400VA is the minimum lighting load for 150 mm²
Lighting Load = Total number of Lighting Outlet ×100VA/Lighting Outlet

Lighting Load = 20 × 100VA = 2000 VA (Acceptable)

Refer to Table 2.20.3.3 Lighting Load Demand Factor
For 10 door apartment under “All Others”
Demand Factor = 100%
2. Computed Load for Sub-Feeder

Circuit 1: Lighting Load

The PEC (Philippine Electrical Code) Part 1 provides that: “100 volt-amperes shall be
the maximum load for each lighting outlet”
Adopting the 100 volt-amperes per lighting outlet:
For 12 lighting outlets at 100 volt-amperes per out let
Load = 12 outlets X 100 VA = 1200 VA
Load Current
IL = (Load in VA)/ Supply Voltage
= 𝟏2𝟎𝟎 𝐕𝐀/𝟐𝟑𝟎= 5.21 𝐀

Circuit 2: Lighting Load

The PEC (Philippine Electrical Code) Part 1 provides that: “100 volt-amperes shall be
the maximum load for each lighting outlet”
Adopting the 100 volt-amperes per lighting outlet:
For 8 lighting outlets at 100 volt-amperes per out let
Load = 8 outlets X 100 VA = 800 VA

Load Current
IL = (Load in VA)/ Supply Voltage
=𝟖𝟎𝟎 𝐕𝐀/𝟐𝟑𝟎= 3.48 𝐀

Circuit 3: Receptacle Outlet

Article 2.20.2.5 Other Loads – All Occupancies. (I) Receptacle Outlet. ”… receptacle
outlets shall be calculated at not less than 200 volt-amperes for each single or for each
multiple receptacle in one yoke …”
For 12 outlets at 200 volts – amperes per outlet
Load = 12 outlets X 200 VA = 2400 VA
Load Current
IL = (Load in VA)/ Supply Voltage
=2400 𝐕𝐀/𝟐𝟑𝟎= 10.4349 𝐀

Circuit 4: Receptacle Outlet

Article 2.20.2.5 Other Loads – All Occupancies. (I) Receptacle Outlet. ”… receptacle
outlets shall be calculated at not less than 200 volt-amperes for each single or for each
multiple receptacle in one yoke …”
For 8 outlets at 200 volts – amperes per outlet
Load = 8 outlets X 200 VA = 1600 VA
Load Current
IL = (Load in VA)/ Supply Voltage
=160𝟎 𝐕𝐀/𝟐𝟑𝟎= 𝟔.9562 𝐀
Circuit 4: 8 kVA Electric Range
For 8 kVA Electric Range
IL = 34.78
Circuit 5: 2 x 2.5 kVA Water Heater
For 2 x 2.5 kVA Water Heater
IL = 10.87 x 2 = 21.74 A
Circuit 9: 6A ACU
For 6A ACU
IL = 6 x 2 = 12 A

3. Main Service Feeder

1 x 8000VA 1st Floor = 80 m² = 150 sq. meter

2 x 2500VA 2nd Floor = 70 m²
1 x 1500VA
2 x 1580VA 150 m² (16VA/ sq. meter) = 2400 VA
1 x 1500VA
18760VA

18760VA + 2400VA = 21160VA I = 21160VA/230V = 92 A
