MEMORANDUM

Date: September 25, 2020

To: Dr. Nicholas Schwartz
From: Dariana Miramontes
Subject: Student Learning Objectives Reflection

The purpose of this memo is to talk about how English 2210 has prepared me with my
communication and writing skills that I can use in my future by explaining the Student Learning
Outcomes that I used throughout this semester.
The first Student Learning Outcome (SLO) that I have improved on because of this course is #1
Project Planning, “Planning, researching, and composing technical documents (as a lifecycle
process) in teams and individually”. This was used when I did any assignment in this course. I
like to plan out what I am going to write about and how I am going to accomplish the work. This
being by splitting what I was going to do for an assignment into certain days. When working in a
group I l like to plan out everyone's roles along with keeping due dates into mind. Setting days to
finish a section of a group project is helpful to keep work organized and done on time.
I also used SLO #6 Visual Communication, “Using visual design principles to develop audience-
friendly data displays, including charts, tables, infographics, line graphics, and presentations”.
An example can be when I did my MWA2. This was an assignment to do instructions and I
remember I wanted to include pictures in my work based on my different audiences. I added
more images to the children instructions because I took into consideration on what keeps kids
involved along with ways, they can understand better.
SLO #5 Written Communication “Composing clear, stylistically responsible prose that avoids
errors and pays attention audience needs” was used in all my writing assignments. I try to
contribute who my audience is along with having as little number of errors in my work. Taking
my audience into consideration in all my writings helped me format the way I did the work along
with the words and vocabulary I would use. For example, when writing a memo, I tried to write
more professional whereas doing my set of instructions I tried to use simple words and layouts.
This can also be tied to SLO #7 Reviewing and Editing, “Across media and contexts, ensuring
final clear style, user centered writing, and error-free spelling and mechanics”. To improve this
skill, I read my writing out loud to ensure that it makes sense along with using resources like
Grammarly and spell check. I do try to incorporate peer reviews in my work, but it was not that
easy to do this semester due to the class being online.
Overall, I think I used all the Student Learning Outcomes without even realizing. This course
helped me learn how to use new communication skills in my writing for any future professional
use.
