4.Set up work area Ensure work is not conducted in close proximity to electrical power lines.
4.Contact with electricity
Check for:
All electrical work will be performed by qualified personnel familiar with
applicable code requirements.
 3m above, either side and below power lines is No Go Zone
Check above for overhead power lines.
 Never erect scaffolding within 10 ft (3 m) of overhead power lines. Refer
to EM 385-1-1, Table 11-1 for Minimum Clearance from Energized
Overhead Electrical Lines
 NEVER string or hang temporary power cords, wires, etc. on metal
scaffolding. Consult with Safety Officer. L
 Between 3-6.4m of power lines a Spotter is required
 Further than 6.4m of power lines is open area
Approach distances will vary based on the voltage level of the live
electrical apparatus. Always contact your local power asset owner for
information prior to commencing crane operations if unsure.

condition.
 Rotating and moving parts of equipment will be guarded if exposed to
contact by employees.
 Grinding wheels and saws will not be operated in excess of their rated
safe speed
Job Steps Hazards Controls RAC
 Alertness at all times. Listen for:
5. Delivery of materials (Pipes, backfill Hit by mobile plant/vehicle o Reversing alarms/beepers
material) o Calls from Plant Operators
o Safety/warning signs, Spotters, traffic barriers etc. must be
obeyed as required
o Work positions should be in clear sight of plant operators
 Reversing trucks, ensure:
o Never stand between truck and another structure when vehicle L
is reversing
o Always maintain visual contact with driver’s mirrors
(Remember: if you can’t see the driver – he can’t see you!)
o Use a spotter where practicable to direct trucks on site
 When unloading ensure:
o Within safe working load (SWL) if using hoisting machinery
o Suitable ground and sufficient room for operation
o Delivery driver and other personnel are removed from area
(use physical barriers to maintain exclusion zone).

Crush injuries
 Ensure: L
o Never stand behind trucks when materials are being tipped
from truck
o Do not direct trucks to unload where material, adjacent to drop
offs or any other area where control of the vehicle may be lost
when unloading
 Handling and Storage of pipes and other material Ensure:
o Check bundles of pipes before releasing retaining frames or
straps
o Unpack on flat even surface
o Pipes are chocked to prevent rolling
o Do not climb onto pipes.
6.Excavating & Backfilling - Working Contact with Mobile plant (excavator
with machinery etc.)
Ground workers. Ensure:
L
 High visibility clothing worn at all times
 Do not stand behind reversing vehicles
 Allow sufficient distance from plant during operation
 Alertness at all times. Listen for:
Reversing alarms/beepers Calls from Plant Operators
Job Steps Hazards Controls RAC
Contact with Mobile plant (excavator  Work positions should be in clear sight of plant operators
6.Excavating & Backfilling - Working etc.)  Ensure an effective system of communication between machine
with machinery operator and ground workers is established before work commences.
 Relevant workers must be trained in the procedures involved prior to the
work commencing
 Ground workers are instructed not to approach machine until the
operator has agreed to their request to approach. L
 Ensure ground workers are instructed on set distances to maintain from
the machine while in operation
 Ground workers are instructed made familiar with the blind spots of the
machine.

When working on top of excavation:

 Erect any barriers & signage necessary to keep others safe and aware
of the fall hazards
7. Fall protection Falls, Crush injuries/falling objects  Do not walk near top edge of excavation; maintain safe distance from
edge Keep trip hazards away from edge of excavation
Ensure that the plant and equipment will operate within their safe working
load limits. Check:
 Weight of load – this should be marked on the load M
 Uniformity of the load – identify the Centre of significance to limit any
possible swinging of the load when lifted
 That the location where the load is to be placed is clear of obstructions.
This includes
 overhead obstructions such as power lines as well as surface or trench
obstructions.
Never climb up and down the trench shoring, (this can loosen or damage
the support system).
 Install effective barriers or barricades to prevent falls into trench
Ladders:
 Use industrial-grade portable ladders to gain access to the excavation
floor if ramp is not available
 Ladder extends at least 1m above the place of landing of the highest
rung to be reached by the feet of any person working on ladder
 Ladders be set up on a level area on firm footing with the base located
approximately a quarter of the vertical height of the ladder from the wall
 Secured against movement L
 Face ladder when ascending/descending. Ensure 3 points of contact
remain on ladder at all times
 Load rating of at least 120kg
 Correct size and length for job

Hit by moving object  Inspect each load before lifting. Ensure load is stable for travel
 Cease operation if persons enter exclusion zone
Never pass the load over a person or allow anyone to stand, work or walk
under raised load
 Do not allow people to be near stacked loads being loaded or unloaded
 Always travel with load in the lowest position available
Do not drag or push load – always lift vertically
8.Fixing pipework Cuts / Lacerations

 Cutting pipe to length. Ensure: L

o Use hand saws where possible
o Sound surface and stable footing
o Work piece is secured before cutting

 Using high speed power cutting tools: Ensure:

o Switch is in the “off” position before plugging it in
o When starting saw it does not touch material before it is at full
RPM (Revolutions Per Minute)
o Align saw on waste side of cut (line should be visible)
o Guide gently and steadily using both hands on the saw. Do not
force movement or over-reach
o Use caution with large off-cuts as these can affect the stability of
the cut
o Bevel the cut end and round off any sharp edges.
Hazardous fumes/ Skin sensitivities

Priming fluid and Solvent cements. Ensure:

L
 Only glues recommended by pipe manufacturer
 Have applicable M/SDS on hand
