Chapter 8 Assignment
1. Qualtrics Survey
a. While taking the survey, I started to realize that I am not as active of a reader as I
think I am. Even after I failed to answer a couple questions quickly after reading
the passage, I still continued to skim over some important information. As well as
how easily distracted I am when doing homework, especially at home. While
taking the survey I would open my phone or engage with my family in one way or
the other.
Although it wasn’t easy to learn, I think this knowledge is important as I get older
and my classes become harder. It is important to break whatever poor study habits
I have now while I still have time, so I can apply what I have learned in class this
semester to classes in the future. Without effective reading skills it's almost
impossible to truly understand course material for reading based classes, which
are common in my major.
2. Reading and writing are different in nature in the same way that recall and recognition
are different. Reading involves the intake of new information that is processed and
converted into knowledge, while writing involves using that knowledge to solidify and/or
create new ideas. It’s easier to be mindful when you know the difference between the
two. It’s very easy for your mind to wander and lose focus while doing both tasks.
Which makes it even more important to understand exactly what you are trying to learn
when reading or what messages you intend to convey with your writing. Thinking about
this before and after doing either task will help increase your reading comprehension and
the quality of your writing.
3. For the first passage, because it introduces a lot of new information I would read more
slowly and make sure that I am comprehending what it am that I’m reading. The second
passage focuses more on comparing and contrasting two concepts and reads more
narratively. When reading the first passage it would be more effective to
highlight/underline the important concepts while for the second I would make sure to
monitor my comprehension of each new similarity/difference
