Two-level output voltage source inverters produce an output voltage of 0 or ±Vdc. This square
wave output has a significant amount of harmonics. To obtain a quality output with minimum
harmonics, an output voltage waveform which is a close approximation to that of a pure sine
wave is required. Multilevel inverters provide a means to obtain a stepped waveform which is
closer to that of a sine wave. Increased number of voltage levels in the output voltage
waveform further reduces the THD. Multilevel voltage source inverters provide a viable
energy conversion alternative with low line current harmonics without the use of
transformers, series-connected synchronized-switching devices or heavy filters. The number
of output levels in a MLI is limited by cost and control complexity constraints. The problem
with increasing the number of levels is that, it requires more number of switches and hence
the number of components increases. Alternatively, employing a modulation technique can
reduce the THD to a great extent as well, but that leads to increased control complexity.
Hence, a seven level inverter with seven switches was designed and a simplified sine
modulation technique was implemented to reduce the THD to a minimum.
