STARTING, DESLUDGING AND STOPPING A PURIFIER

STARTING A PURIFIER

In starting a purifier, it is necessary:

1. First, make sure that the brake is in release position- this ensures that the purifier will rotate
freely once it is started.
2. Second, check the level of oil in the gear case- it is important that all the rotating parts such as
bearing and shafts are well lubricated and the oil level is normal to ensure proper lubrication.
3. Open all the required valves such as discharge valve, oil return valve, oil tank supply valve and all
other required valves in the purifier line.- this must be done in order to let the HFO/DO/LO to
flow appropriately/smoothly and to ensure the smooth operation of the purifier.
4. Start the feed pump- this helps to transfer the oil from settling tank to purifier at desired
pressure.
5. Start the heater- it is necessary to open the heater and must be set at standard heating
temperature to be able to reduce the viscosity of oil before starting the purifier.
6. Start the purifier motor- monitor the current of the puffier motor (20 amps), observe that in the
beginning of start up, the current will shoot up and for a course of time it will come back to the
rated value. It means that the rated RPM is already achieved.
7. Now, the main controller will start fuel oil feed pump. Moreover, the main controller will also
recirculate the oil coming from heater and direct it towards the settling tank. It means that there
is a temperature controller in the 3-way valve which is closely monitored to ensure that the oil
that is flowing to the purifier meets the set point temperature.
8. Open the steam supply valve to the heater and adjust the temperature of the heater to the
desired set point. Moreover, ensure that the drains are open to remove the condensed water
which eventually comes out to the steam pipe and close it once the steam appears. This make
sure that the steam coming into the heater does not contain condensed water and to avoid
corrosion.
9. After that, once the oil feed to purifier is selected, the main controller will send signal to the
right solenoid to supply the bowl with operating water to push up the main cylinder and close
the bowl.
10. The left side solenoid will then, supply the purifier with sealing water. Once sealing water is
supplied, the solenoid valve will close.
11. Once sealing water and operating water is supplied to the purifier, the main controller panel will
closely monitor the temperature in the 3-way valve and will ensure that the desired dirty oil
temperature meets the set point temperature in the 3-way valve. Once it is achieved, the
controller will send signal to the 3-way valve to open towards the purifier. Furthermore, the oil
coming to the purifier will displace the water inside and will create an oil water interface due to
the uneven density of oil and water.
12. The position of interface will depend on the size or diameter of gravity disc which can be found
the manual and through the help of nomogram.
13. Once the oil water interface is made, the heavier solids and denser liquid will go to the
periphery of the bowl due to the centrifugal force and gets collected there.

14. The purified oil is being discharged to the service tank with the help of centripetal pump fixed on
the top of purifier. This provides sufficient flow velocity in order to reach the service tank at the
correct flow rate.
15. Lastly, the main controller continuously monitor the back pressure and the discharge valve
opening will be throttled to maintain the required feed rate.

DE-SLUDGING OF PURIFIER

1. Close the feed to the purifier. This ensure that no oil will flow inside the bowl.
2. The main controller will still recirculate the oil in the 3-way valve and direct it towards the dirty
oil tank to ensure proper temperature of oil.
3. The controller will send signal to the solenoid valve to supply the bowl with closing water. After
10 seconds, open the sealing water to the bowl and should be kept open until the water comes
out completely to the waste water outlet. This ensure that the maximum clean oil is taken out
from purifier and transferred completely to the service tank.
4. Once the water overflows the waste water outlet, stop the sealing water.
5. Next, open the de-sludge water or bowl opening water through the help of solenoid. As the
solenoid supplies the de-sludge water, it will open the pilot valve which pushes down the main
cylinder and opens the sludge ports. All the accumulated sludge on the periphery of the bowl
will go directly to the sludge tanks.

STOPPING OF PURIFIER

1. De-sludge must be done before stopping the purifier.

2. After the de-sludge operation, stop the oil supply to the purifier by setting the 3-way valve
towards the return line.
3. Close the steam supply valve. It is dangerous if left open as it can destroy the tubes where the
oil flows.
4. Stop the feed pump.
5. Switch off the power for the purifier motor.
6. Once the purifier is stopped, close the discharge valve of purifier. Moreover, close also other
required valves that were opened before starting the purifier,
