BEmONC capable Facility or Provider (Comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care)

(Basic emergency obstetric and newborn care)  Can perform the six signal obstetric functions as
in BEmONC as well as:
 Provide emergency newborn interventions:
 Provide caesarian delivery service
 Newborn resuscitation
 Blood banking
 Treatment of neonatal sepsis/infection
 Transfusion services
 Oxygen support
 Blood Transfusion (BT)
 Can perform the six signal obstetric functions as
in BEmONC as well as:
 SIX SIGNAL OB FUNCTIONS
 Capable of providing neonatal emergency
 Parenteral administration of oxytocin in the 3rd
intervention for BemONC.

 Management of low birth weight or preterm
 Parenteral administration of loading dose of
newborn and other specialized newborn
anticonvulsants
care.
 Parenteral administration of initial dose of
antibiotics
 In an area with a population of at least 500,000
 Performance assisted deliveries (imminent WHO recommends 1 CEmONC- capable facility

 Removal of retained products conception

 BEmONC capable Facility is able to Provide


emergency newborn interventions which includes:
 Newborn resuscitation
 Treatment of neonatal sepsis / infection
 Oxygen support. It is also capable of providing
blood transfusion services depending on the
presents qualified personnel and required
equipment and supplies.
 BemONC capable facility can be based in an RHU,
BHs, lying-in clinic or birthing home can either be a
stand-alone facility or composed of a network of
facilities and skilled health professionals capable of
delivering the 6 signal functions such as:
 Doctors
 Nurses
 Midwives
 Medtech
 Midwife can provide lifesaving interventions within
the intent of DOH, 2010 – 0014 = ratio, 1 N/midwife
with physician on call = BemONC facility per =
125,000 population
