CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter outlines the research designs, participants and sampling, data collection, data

analysis procedure and ethical consideration.

Research Design

This study will be using a qualitative phenomenological approach using descriptive

design. According to Tenny (2019), qualitative research is classified as exploratory research. It

helps generate hypothesis as well as explore and understand the reasons for the data. It uses

techniques including structured and unstructured interviews, focus groups, participant

observation and surveys. The goal is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular

phenomenon. Moreover, Creswell (2013) believes that a phenomenological study is an approach

to a qualitative research that focuses the commonality of a lived experience within a particular

group. The goal is to arrive at a description of the nature of the particular phenomenon.

Neergaard (2019) asserts that descriptive qualitative study is discovering the who, what, where,

of events or experiences and gaining insights from informants regarding a poorly understood

phenomenon.

Participants and Sampling

The research participants of this study will be 15 Grade 11 HUMSS students from

evening session. We will be selecting 5 students in each of the 3 sections from Chloe, Elizabeth

and Hannah. These students are appropriate for our study because some of them are feel
unmotivated and doesn’t have the time to cope up of their studies due to their family’s lack of

support, which it may affect on their Academic performances also it is related in our topic. This

study will employ a purposive sampling in the selection of the participants. Arikunto (2010)

states that purposive sampling is the process of selecting sample by taking subject that is not

based on the level or area, but it is taken based on the specific purposes.

Data Collection Procedure

The researchers will send a letter addressed to the School Principal, Mrs. Elsa D.

Villanueva, MAHum through the Assistant Principal of the Senior High School Unit Evening

class Mrs. Evelinda O. Castillo. A separate letter will be addressed to the subject teacher to allow

the chosen participants to be excused in the class. Upon approval, the researchers will personally

approach the research participants for the interview. Afterwards, the responses of the

participants will then be tallied in a table using Microsoft Word ready for data analysis.

Data Analysis Procedure

The data analysis method that will be used in the study is thematic analysis. The

researchers will use narratives which are the effect statements of the participants and will be

analyzed using the theme analysis foam. Braune, Clarke, and Weate (2016) define thematic

analysis as a robust method of analysis that is uncomplicated to use for beginner qualitative

researchers, as well as for more experienced and researchers working in interdisciplinary teams

and/or looking to produce research for public consumption.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter the result of the study are presented and discussed to the aim of the study,

which was determined the Lack of Family Support. You can see the differences and the

similarity of their opinions. These aspects were described in the previous chapter that presented

the methodology used in the study.

CHAPTER IV

Discussion

Difficulties Experienced due to Lack of Family Support

The first findings showed the difficulties experienced due to lack of family support is

financial problems. Some students said that they feel empty because they cannot afford nor buy

of their needs, and difficult in handling money. Falahati and Paim (2012), the purpose of this

paper is to examine the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between financial

attitude, financial socialization and secondary socialization agents on experiencing financial

problems among university students. The majority of respondents suffered from financial

problems because of their limited financial resources and were faced with high cost of living.

Their spending levels were still in control and within the boundaries of being a student.

The second findings showed the difficulties experienced due to lack of family support is

feeling unmotivated. They feel tired when going to school and many absences would be followed

and there’s no one who can cheer them up to continue what they are doing. According to

Jameson and Torres (2019), the reason why a student is unmotivated is without a supportive

relationship

The third findings showed the difficulties experienced due to lack of family support is

experiencing not be able to focus on studies.
