Lesson Plan Template: KIN 355

Teacher Name: Erica Pryor (Ms. Pryor is referenced through the lesson)
Name of Lesson: “The Music Says Move”
Date: November 17, 2020
Grade Level: 2nd – 3rd grade
Targeted SHAPE Standards: 1, 2, & 3

Specific Objective: Students will be able to use hand-eye coordination to throw and catch a ball-shaped item
at least 5 times in a row. This is measurable by observation. If this lesson is given in real time over a video
chat platform (such as Zoom or Google Meet), then the teacher would be able to directly observe students.
If this lesson is pre-recorded for students to watch at a later date, it may be possible to have students send a
video recording of themselves practicing this skill.

Secondary Objective: Students will be able to participate in at least three (3) 30 second anaerobic activity
intervals.

Today you will need two (2) things for class. First, please find a placesmall ball
where you can sit down safely. This could be a chair, couch, or the OR

like a tennis ball. Please pause this video to take a moment to grab that

2 – 2.5 Set Induction: N/A
minutes • “How many of you have ever seen someone juggle?” (Pause)
• “Great! Juggling is something that takes a lot of practice to become
good at. It also takes good hand-eye coordination.”
• “Take a few seconds to think about what hand-eye coordination is.
Remember we learned about this earlier this week.” (pause)
• “Hand-eye coordination is using your eyes to guide your hands. It is
really important to have good hand-eye coordination to juggle because
you have to catch the pins that you aren’t looking at. Not everyone will
want to try juggling, but there are many other reasons why it is
important to have hand-eye coordination. What are some reasons you
can think of?” (Pause)
• “Some reasons that I thought of are for sports. I know some of you
enjoy playing soccer, basketball, football, softball, gymnastics. All of
these and every other sport also requires hand-eye coordination.”
• “Today we will practice this skill”
• Continue to learnable piece
1 minute Learnable Piece: N/A
• “Today we will do an activity that will focus on two things. The first
thing we will focus on today is hand-eye coordination. We will practice
this by tossing the ball or paper ball up in the air and catching it while
sitting down. Your goal is to throw and catch the ball at least 5 times in
a row. If you find it too difficult, try to toss it lower. And for an extra
challenge, try throwing it higher. But, make sure there aren’t any
lights, fans or anything else that you could hit above you.“
• “The second thing we will focus on today is increasing our anaerobic
activity ability. Think about what anaerobic activity is and an example.”
(Pause)
• “Fantastic! An anaerobic activity is a physical activity that is high
energy and short. Sprints and jumping jacks are two examples that I
thought of.”
1 -2 Directions or Presentation of New Learning Material: N/A
minutes • Teacher: “Today’s activity is called ‘The Music Says Move.’ For this
activity we will start sitting down with whatever you’re using as a ball
beside you. To start, there will be no music, and we will start throwing
the ball up and catching it. We will continue to do this, until the music
starts. When you hear the music start, stand up and set your ball on
your chair, so you don’t trip on it. When I play the music, I will also give
you directions for which anaerobic activity to do.”
• Safety: “It is so important that you have a clear space to participate in.
Please double check that there is nothing that you will bump into or
trip on.”
• Teacher: “Ready?”
15 seconds Transition: Materials
• “Alright, let’s get started! Go ahead and sit down and pick up your already
ball.” listed
• “On the count of three (3), start throwing your ball up and catching it.” above. No
new
materials.
5-7 minutes Activity Details and Diagram: Materials
already
listed
above. No
new
materials.

After approx 15 -30 seconds, turn on the music and stand up. Choose from the
below list of activities that the students can do for anaerobic activity. The
teacher should model these activities and do the lesson along with the
students.
• Jumping jacks, jogging in place, high knees, toe touches with jumps,
etc.
Have students do these anaerobic activities for 30 seconds. Then, turn off the
music. When the music is off sit back down and immediately pick up the ball
and toss it and catch it as before. Continue this cycle for at least 3 full cycles
(Ideally 4-5 cycles). When done, congratulate the students on completing the
activity and move onto the lesson plan closure.

Note: if this lesson is done over a format that allows for real-time interaction
(think, Zoom or Google Meet), then watch students during the activities and
give praise for students who are doing well and students who may need
encouragement. Feedback can be general feedback such as “nice jumping
jacks, students!” Or feedback can be specific such as “I noticed Michaela
caught the ball 5 times in a row! Great job!” This feedback is specific to each
students needs and comfort levels—make sure to know your students and
their needs.
2 minutes Lesson Plan Closure: N/A
• “Whew! You finished! Awesome! What did you think about this
activity?” (Pause)
• “When you were sitting down, you had to use your hand-eye
coordination to catch the ball that you were tossing. Was that hard?
Was it easy?” (Pause)
• “Now that you’ve practiced hand-eye coordination, can you think of
other examples of when you might use this?” (Pause)
• “Do you have any ways that helped you catch the ball more times?”
N/A Possible Modifications and Notes for Future Reference: N/A
• Closed captions could be very helpful for students who are Deaf or have
hearing impairments.
• This could be modified to have discussions in class if this lesson was
given in a live, in-person class session.
• Students can throw the ball less high if it is difficult to catch, and if it is
too easy to catch, students can throw it higher.
• Students should also note that the anaerobic activities are self-
motivated.
o Students can and should do these activities at a pace that fits
their own bodies and their own abilities. If they start to feel
light headed or ill, they should sit down or take a break.
