 Activity # 1- Think Pair Share (Yanis Emmanuelle V. Lim, Genina Lou C. Feleo)

At the present year, FNRI stated that one million Filipino children suffer from acute
malnutrition and facts provided in the article call out our attention to be a part of this
dilemma and extend our help in leading more people to a healthy lifestyle as a nursing
student. We are aware of the significance of having good nutrition and should be informed
on how we can enhance the nutritional status of an individual. Last year, UNICEF stated
that there is also a common case for children being too short and stunted for their age. By
simply reaching out to our own communities and giving advice to families about having the
right nutrition intake, combined with physical activity can help them reach and maintain a
healthy height and weight is one step. We can also inform them that this can reduce risks of
chronic diseases, and promote holistic care. There may be a lot of factors that continue to
cause malnutrition in our country, like social, economic, physical and cultural influences that
lead to the different habitual consumption of certain foods and in traditions of preparation. In
certain cases, as mentioned, prevalence of overweight and obesity grows its rate and
though these conditions can occur if a person’s food intake is greater than what the body
can use for energy, it is also considered as a malnutrition. In my opinion, education and
facilitation in nutrition is what is inadequate and nurses play a key to offer those services to
people. This can be done while nurses or nursing students follow guidelines in nutrition
while being through their conversations with patients and families and through their work
while providing or feeding to critically ill patients.
The treatment of malnourishment varies depending on its causes. Nurses, in this
case, should recognize the severity of malnourishment to know whether a patient should be
treated in a hospital or at home. The primary thing a nurse should do to further improve the
nutrition and activity of their patients is to take inventory of their eating habits. What he or
she is getting too much of, too little of or what he or she should eat or not eat. Then, a plan
should be developed such as making dietary changes that fits each family's goals and
beliefs but with the responsibility to first educate them about the nutritional contents of food
and how to make healthy choices. For patients who are underweight, the goal is to
incorporate healthy fats to their diet. Additionally, it should be ensured that their meals are
nutrient-rich with the necessary protein, minerals and vitamins to help them stay healthy and
strong. While for those who are overweight, aside from making them eat a balanced and
calorie controlled-diet, it is important to introduce them to weight-management programs,
changing their habits and engaging them in regular physical activities. If they can not,
weight counseling should be done by primary care doctors and nurses to lower the chances
of complications for bariatric patients. As student nurses, we can somehow make a
difference to the life of a patient suffering from malnourishment by using our knowledge in
nutrition and diet to educate them about the importance of good nutrition and how it can
reduce the risk of some diseases such as diabetes, stroke, cancer, etc. And prevent
illnesses associated with malnourishment.

FOOD DIARY

The chart shows my daily log of what I eat and drink each day for the
past five days. This helped me to realize what my eating habits are and what I
consume that plays a big part in my nutritional status. I don’t take any vitamins or
food supplements and usually rely on the foods I eat. Good nutrition is an important
part of leading a healthy lifestyle and In my case, I am trying to take care of my
nutrition but sometimes fail to because I don’t have a regular set of time of when I
should eat, like sometimes I eat my lunch later or earlier and had the habit to skip
breakfasts. This chart can guide me to nutritional education and for achieving my
dietary goals. As displayed in the chart, I try to eat fruits at least twice a week or
more to get the micronutrients specifically, vitamins and minerals that are essential
for my body. These will help in boosting up my immune system. Vegetables and
starchy or grain foods is also included in my diet and these food groups helps a lot
in giving me the energy, calories and other nutrients I need. There is also meat in
my diet which serves as my sources of protein like fish, chicken or beef. My daily
water intake does not meet the suggested water intake, that is why I need to
improve in that area because it plays a big part in the processes happening in our
system. I also drinking tea or coffee everyday. Based on this diet-diary, I also need
to do better at watching the sweet foods I eat because taking in too much sugar can
cause a lot of negative effects on my body just like gaining more weight and
releasing large amounts of insulin that can cause hypoglycemia or insulin
resistance. I think, better food choices combined with physical activity will help me
reach and maintain a healthy weight and reduce many risks of chronic diseases like
heart disease and cancer.
 Activity # 3- You Are What You Eat

 Activity # 4- Experiential Learning / Self – assessment

Personally, I prefer to eat green leafy vegetables like lettuce, pechay, etc, most of the
time but my family, especially my siblings do not like those kind of food. Also, I have a habit
of drinking tea or coffee alternately and does not like to take any vitamin or food
supplements. As of now, we always have meat for our viand and rice on the daily basis. Our
family also consumes huge amount of food including all of the food groups because we
we’re brough-up by our mom always saying that we should enjoy food and to not be guilty
about spending your money on it. We do not have any plans in choosing our foods and just
likes to try new dishes most of the time, cooking is one of our shared hobbies. In terms of
our cultural setting, we always eat spicy foods because my mom is a Bicolana and though
my dad is from Leyte, sometimes he eats chili pepper as it is. That was one of the reason
why I always have a high tolerance for spicy foods. And in relation to our religion, we do not
really have any restrictions about diet or details given on what foods are we allowed to eat. I
observe that our food preference is not cannot always be considered a health-conscious or
traditional diet but we try our best to have a balanced diet and my parents always make us
take multivitamins, though I don’t take them usually. In conclusion, My family likes to have
various foods but each food group is definitely included and I am sure that we can get the
right amount of nutritional value from these choices.
