Introduction
Welcome to the player pack of Melbourne in Flames – one of Australia’s Premier
Warhammer 40,000 Events.
MIF’s guiding philosophy is that everybody should be able to come at the title
from their own angle of speciality. Some players just win games as a habit, some
are great to play, and some are genius with a paint brush. At the end of the day,
it’s the player who gets the most right out of all those things that should win.
Warhammer 40,000 is an exceptionally unique hobby that isn’t all about game
play. It therefore requires an all round method of determining a winner.
2011 is our fourth year – and we’re hoping to make it our best yet! Our wonderful
venue of the past two years is unavailable, so we’re wholeheartedly moving to
the awesome Realm of Legends Megastore (190-198 Mt Dandenong Road,
Croydon)!
Due to comfort size restrictions at RoL, we have had to lower our numbers
slightly to 100 places, which still means we’re in the top three sized 40k events in
the country.
Tickets will go on sale on Saturday February 5th 2011. Details of how to buy
tickets will be available from the Melbourne in Flames Website from the beginning
of February. We sold about 150 tickets to MIF 2010 in less than a week, so
expect the rush to be huge – get in quick!
As from per previous years, drinks and chocolate bars will be available (this year
from the RoL café) and for the first time coffee, and wait for it, MIF will be
licensed for the first time!
Also like last year, there will be some seriously kick-ass raffles happening.
I will be assisted again by my able lieutenants, Mike Consto, Ben Isbester, Ramon
Saheed and Hannah Llewellyn. They are my eyes and ears, and hands and feet.
Feel free to ask them any questions that you have on the day.

Location
Melbourne In Flames 2011 will be held at Realm of Legends (RoL) - 190-198
Mount Dandenong Rd Croydon. RoL have been terrific supporters of MIF over the
past two years (including having a stall both years) and are continuing that
involvement in 2011.
RoL will be licensed, has a café where soft drinks, snacks and coffee are
available. They are also only a short walk from the main strip of Croydon
Shopping Centre – where there is plenty of variety for lunch.
Realm also has a huge range of Games Workshop and other games
manufacturers stock.
We have been invited to choose which tabletops and terrain sets that we would
like to use for Melbourne in Flames – and we’re very keen to use some of their
iconic 40k tables.
Parking spaces will be highly contested out the front of the shop (especially on
the Saturday). However, there are plenty of parks nearby where car parking is
available a short walk away. Even so, it is recommended that you car pool if
possible.

Blood Rule
After a painful personal experience at Arcanacon two years ago, we urge any
players who feel they could be in line for the Blood Rule (specifying one player
you wont play in the first three rounds) to drop an email to:
contact@melbourneinflames.com
Grudge Matches
After a hiatus of two years we are allowing grudge matches during the first round
of MIF this year. However, match ups will be reviewed before they are confirmed,
just to ensure that the games will be fair (so as not to match a gnarled veteran
against a wet-behind-the-ears noob, or match the Warhamster against Eatzilla!).
If you’d like to set up a grudge match-up, to drop an email to:
contact@melbourneinflames.com
Scoring
Battle Scoring
Players will fight out 5 battles over the two days, with each battle worth up to 20
Battle Points (BP). Each battle will be played according to a mission sheet that
will get handed out before each game.
• Players first identify the result of the game based on the objectives of the
particular mission that was played.
• In addition, the players can receive the following bonus (and cumulative)
battle points during the game:
Sports scores are scores given to you by each opponent, rating your game on its
sportsmanship. Good sporting behaviours that should be rewarded are accurate
measurement, clear use of dice, explaining to your opponent exactly what you’re
doing and how you’re doing it, keeping a smile on your face even if you’re getting
whipped and being generous to your opponent in rule disputes.
At the end of every round, players will be asked to rate their opponents in terms
of how sportsmanlike they are. There are five questions players must answer
about their opponent and a scale mark from one to five. The questions are:
The scale represents the opponents attempt to follow the games most important
rule (which is to have fun!) – on the scoresheet there will be a box where you can
place a number between 1 and 5 (where 5 indicates the opponent going out of
their way to ensure a fun game for both players; 3 indicates that the game was
pleasant, friendly and enjoyable; and 1 indicates the opponent seemingly going
out of their way to make the game not fun).
Total - 50 points
In addition, at the end of the tournament, players will be asked to provide a star
player (their best and fairest opponent for the weekend). This will be used to tie
break the best sports prizes.
Composition Scoring
Composition is a handicap score that you will receive as part of your total mark.
Comp is designed to balance the power differences between different army lists -
if army A is more powerful than army B (regardless of player, mission, terrain)
then army B will get more points in the composition score than army A. Handicap
mechanisms are used in many sports\competitions (including horse racing and
athletics (and even sporting competitions like AFL, NFL, NBA with drafts and
salary caps) in order to level the playing field - so that each competitor has a
roughly equal chance of winning at the start of the competition.
Your army list will be handed to three judges who will rate your army on a pure
power scale. Each judge will rate your list on a scale of 1 to 5 according to the
following, example criteria:
5: This list has serious weaknesses built into it. Playing the list will be very
challenging. It has a number of units in it that are weaker than their points
cost, or the synergy of the list components is terrible.
1: This list has few weaknesses. There are few sacrifices made in terms of
point efficiency. The list contains units that are the best in their codex, and
work well together in combination.
Most lists will fall around the middle of the scale; only tough\very weak lists will
find themselves outside that group.
The three judges scores will be added together to provide a Judges Total. The
Judges Total has a corresponding score that will be your Final Composition Score.
This score is weighted, so that standard armies will score 17 of the 25 available
points. Weaker than standard have only an extra 8 points to receive, while
stronger armies may score anywhere between 1 point and 16 points. Please see
the table on the following page to determine how Judges Totals correspond to
Final Scores.

Composition scoring can be punishing and many players feel upset about the
score they get. This score is entirely subjective and that the score indicates three
separate judge’s opinions. With that in mind, we recommend that you err on the
side of caution and choose some units that you feel will soften a hard list (ie take
a Chaos Dreadnought, unit of Flash Gitz, Ratlings, non-BA Vanguard Veterans to
balance out the unit of Obliterators, Nob Bikers, Chimera Vets,
Vulkan/melta/flamer schmo).
Total - 25 points
Army List Scoring
A few notes:
o Objectives will be marked over the weekend - we will come and visit you
at the tables.
o 12 points - If the list is emailed to us before this time and is 100% correct.
If late or incorrect, players will receive 0 points – so make sure you get it
right! - We know this is harsh, but for Panel Comp scoring we need lists as
early and correct as possible.
o Up to 3 points - For objectives fitting your army (Bases with chapter
insignia transfers = 1 point; modelling your objectives to fit your back
story = 3 points)
Total - 15 points
Painting Scoring
Painting will be judged according to a set of proscribed questions (see below). A
number of these questions have MASTERCLASS points attached to them (and
questions 7 and 8 are entirely based on MASTERCLASS points) – these are
subjective points that are based on the judges interpretation of the
painting\modelling in your army.
You should make it your business to know what these points are for and be
prepared to point out parts of your armies that might gain you these points.
Total - 30 points
