Unit: Signs Of The Time Sequence: Developing skills
Rubric: Reading and Writing
Lesson: Comparative/ Superlative Adjectives

*Step1- Teacher elicits some adjectives from the Ss, trying to keep them as varied as
possible (short and long adj) then write them on the board.

*Step2- The Teacher uses an adj as an ex to introduce the lesson:

-T draws two shirts (one smaller/ bigger than the other) and asks are they small/ large?
How can we compare between them?
- Or T chooses a S, then point out ‘the teacher is tall/ your classmate is also tall!. Ss
would notice and uses the comparative form.

*Step3- T explains that there are two rules for comparing using adj.
1- Less than 2 syllables the form is: adj+er+ than
2- More than 2 syllable the form is: more +adj+than
* T writes two examples to illustrate the rule:
1- The table is heavier than the chair
2- Tennis is more difficult than football

*Step4- T picks a student to form a sentence in the comparative form using one of the adj
on the board (from step1) . T chooses another one to correct the first S:
S1: My copybook is more organized than yours.
S2: That is correct because organized is an adjective with more than 3 syllables

Rule:
ADJECTIVE COMPARATIVE SUPERLATIVE

One Syllable (short Fast Faster Fastest

adj) Fine Finer Finest
Hot Hotter Hottest
Two syllables Happy happier happiest
ending in (-y)
Two syllables or modern More modern Most modern
more

Practice: Fill in with the correct form of the adjective:

1- My brother is ………….. than my sister, and he is the ………… in our family. (short)
2- Houses are ….. ……………than flats. (expensive)
3- Traditional food is ……….. than fast food. (healthy)
4- Spring is …………. than winter and summer is the ……….. (hot)
