Nature of the lesson: Grammar


Title of the lesson: The Comparative of superiority: Short adjevtives
Aim: To familiarize pupils with the use of the Comparative of superiority
(short adjectives)for their daily expressions
Objectives: By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to:
Give the right form of five short adjectives in comparative
of superiority .
- To Turn five adjevtives with short adjectives into comparative of
superiority
- Build their own sentences(05) using the comparative of superiority with
short adjectives
Prerequisites: Students have already been taught:
- The different tenses at all forms
- The short and long adjectives
- The comparative of equality and the comparative of inferiority
Anticipated problems:
- Students may have problems with the short adjectives’ rule remarks.
- They may fail to have necessary linguistic skills to build
some sentences
Anticipated solutions:

- The teacher will insist on short adjectives'rule remarks
- He also helps them reformulate their sentences or correct them
Teaching Aids and Materials: Chalk, duster, blackboard, Lesson Plan….

Warm -up (5 minutes )


Step 1: Greetings+ date asking and writing on the board (2 minutes)
Step 2: song : Brother John (2 minutes)
Step 3: Day's lesson announcement: Thanks ! You're singing very well .
Today we are going to see a grammar lesson on the comparative
of superiority. So i invite you to read silently the sentences i'm
going to put on the board.(1minute)

Corpus
1- Moussa is taller than Issa
2- Sara is fatter than Fatou.
3- Amina is happier than her sister.
4- Beans is better than rice.

Step 4: presentation of the lesson (15minutes)


Teacher : A volonter to read the sentences on the board.

Teacher : What are adjevtives in these sentences ?
Expected Answer : Adjevtives are determined and underlined.
Teacher 's Appreciation : Very good !
Teacher : These adjectives are short or long adjevtives ?
Expected Answer : They are short adjectives.

of the adjevtive ?
Expected Answer : we have er at the end of the adjevtive.

Expected Answer : we use them to compare people, animals and things.

Expected Answer : We have the comparative of superiority for
short adjectives .

Teacher : Who Can draw the rule of comparative of superiority
for short adjectives from the example on the board ?
Expected Answer : Adjevtive+ er + than.

Teacher : Now,see the sentence 2 what do you remark ?
Expected Answer : We remark that the last consonnant of the adjevtive
is doubled .
Expected Answer : ok Good.
Teacher : Why is it doubled ?
Expected Answer : Because fat is short adjective formed by CVC.
Teacher's Appreciation : Very good. Short adjectives CVC,we double
the last consonnant.
Teacher : Observe the sentence 3 and tell what you see.
Expected Answer : We remark that happy is transformed.

Teacher : What is transformation in the adjevtive ?
Expected Answer : Happy :" y" is transformed before adding the
comparative mark "er".
Teacher's Appreciation : Excellent. So when adjective is ended by "y" we
transform the "y" to "i" before adding " er"
Teacher : Now, look the last sentence. Give the correct form of better
without the comparative mark.
Expected Answer : it's' Good".
Teacher's Appreciation : nice!
Teacher : Why does it exchange in the comparative of superiority ?
Expected Answer : it exchanges because Good is irregular adjective.
Teacher's Appreciation : That's fantastic !! They are also two others
irregular adjectives: Bad and far .

Grammar: The comparative of superiority( short adjectives)
We the comparative of superiority to compare people animals and things. To
use a qualifying adjective in the comparative of superiority, we need to know
if the adjective is LONG or SHORT
-Rule for short adjectives:
Example: Moussa is taller than Issa.
REMARKS:
Short Adjective +er+than
- Short adjevtive formed CVC we double the last consonnant
and add the "er" than
Eg: Fat-----------------> Fatter than
- Hot----------------->hotter than
- Adjevtive ended by "y" we transform the "y" to "i" before adding
"er" than

Eg: Happy------------->happier than
Lazy-------------->lazier than

STAGE II: PRACTICE (12minutes)


Step 1: Oral activity: (4 minutes)
Instruction :The teacher asks the students to listen to him carefully and give the
comparative of superiority form of the following adjevtives:
Example : Tall------------>Taller than
Young - lazy - long -big - far.

Step 2: Written activity (8 minutes)


Turn these adjectives into comparative of superiority.
1- The sheep is ........ the cow ( black)
2- Moussa was …………..his brother. (dirty)
3- My bag is......... the yours ( pretty)
4- Our English marks are…….. our mathematics marks. (good)
5- Moumouni is .............. Latif ( strong)

Step3: Correction
The teacher instructs Pupils to exchange their exercise copybooks. He asks
volunteers to come and to correct the exercise on the board. Pupils are asked to
assess their mates’ exercises by marking. After he praises students and asks
them to take the correction in their copybooks. (4minutes)

STAGE III: PRODUCTION (23 minutes)


Step 1: Group work.(7minutes)
Build five (5) meaningful sentences using the adjectives given
in the comparative of superiority.
adjectives: Young -pretty, easy ,short, far.
Step 2: Feedback : The teacher imstructs leaners to stop performing the pair
work and asks some to read their proposals . He guides and correct pupils some
model sentences must be recorded on the board. (8minutes)
He praises the good answers.
Step 3: Homework : Once at home , translate these sentences into
english. (2minutes)
1- L'éducation des filles est meilleure que l'éducation des garçons.
2- Les conditions des filles sont pires que les conditions des garçons à
l'école
3- Les filles sont plus chanceuses que les garçons.
Step 4: (Note taking and administrative duties)
The teacher instructs the pupils to copy the lesson and the homework while he
fills the record book. (5minutes)

Step 5: Lesson closing: The teacher thanks the pupils for their attendance and
before leaving the classroom he recalls pupils not to forget performing the
homework once at home (1 minute)
