LESSON: STAR 3A - LESSON 1 - ALPHABET

Time: 25 minutes

Lesson objectives: ​Student at level 3A is assumed to have an alphabet background.This lesson aims to review the
alphabets and spellings.

Setting up the class:

- The teacher should log into the system via the link shared by Operations Executive 5 minutes before starting
time.
- The Operation team should:

+ Upload PDF file of lecture slide: ​STAR 3A - LESSON 1 - ALPHABET

+ Open Youtube tabs for song at slide ​1,3,11​ and paste the Youtube link,
+ Open a whiteboard and upload Kani image, carrot images in order to reward Kani. Teachers can save
and upload directly from your computer

General notes:

- Speed: For this level, speaking speed is really important. Teachers should speak slower than usual. Speed will
be decided based on student’s age, the younger the slower. Speed will also depend on the students’ level.
- TPR: Using TPR is really important to motivate the student and using puppets, flashcards, as required, will help
motivate the student.
- Pronunciation: For ESL student, correcting pronunciation is really important and teachers should correct during
the class.
- The teacher should appraise the student or correct positively frequently.
- If the student cannot answer, the teacher can mouth then say out loud to help.
- If the student cannot concentrate, the teacher can use TPR or puppets.

!!! At level Star, students are ​NOT ​expected to be able to read or write. Please make sure that the student tool
mode is off during class. It should be granted for students ​who are really comfortable with the computer mouse
and only for the purpose of drawing lines and shapes from level Star 3.

Evaluate student performance after class (for teachers): ​ Please spare five minutes to fill in the performance
evaluation for the student via Kynaforkids Teacher’s App. This is ​compulsory​ ​in order to finish the class. Please be
noticed that the form should be filled in for each class within 24 hours.

No.1 2 - Teacher introduces himself, herself; greeting the student and motivate the student

- Teacher should ask the student to say: My name is ............ (student name)

- Then teacher introduces Kani, rewarding system: "If you do a great job, Kani will get a carrot."

- Teacher says: "Let's unscramble this word" (points at letters E H O L L) and signals student to
say "HELLO". Teacher praises student and asks: "Where can we find these letters?" and tries
to signal student to the answer "Alphabet". In case student can't answer easily, use hints: "In
the alphabet or in a house?"
No.2 2 - Teacher says: "Now, let's look and read with me!"

- Teacher underlines each letter, say out loud and asks student to repeat twice.
 - Teacher should listen carefully to student's pronunciation and fix if needed.

1:43) and sing along with the student.

- During the song, teacher can freely pause (a b c d <pause>) then asks student: "What's the
next letter?"

- Teacher should only pause for 5-6 times during the song.

- Encourage student if he/she answers correctly.

No.4 5 - Teacher: "Now, let's practice the letters we have learnt. Listen and choose the circle the
correct answer. Let's do this example." (Teacher says the sound /ei/)

- Teacher checks again if student can understand the task.

- Teacher might help by asking: which letter is correct? The blue one or green one?

- In case student cannot hear the sound very clearly, teacher says it out loud.

(Teacher lets student choose and gives feedback, distinguishing the two sounds)

- Teacher says the sound /iː/, S listens and circles.

- In case student cannot hear the sound very clearly, teacher says it out loud.

No.6 - Teacher says: "Let's hear the last sound". Teacher says the sound /ju/ then asks "Which one,
U for Umbrella or O for Octopus?"

No.7 - Teacher reads out loud the letter list then student repeats twice.
- Teacher (circles the letter) and gets student to repeat individually.
No.8 3 - Teacher says: "Let's do some tracing".

- Teacher: "Show me your hand, please" (teacher assists student to grant the writing /drawing
tool" and gets student to trace the word.
 - Praise student when he/she completes the task.

No.9 3 - Teacher says: "These words have a missing letter. Which one is missing? Find the letter from
the clouds"
- Teacher makes an example with <ant> and asks "What is it?" and signals student the to
answer <ant> then teacher asks "Which letter is missing?" and signals student to answer <a>.
- Teacher goes through each word.

No.10 2 Teacher says: "Let's play a mini game. Kani is lost, doesn't know how to go home (uses body
language to illustrate). Let's help her!"

Teacher (grants the writing tool) to make an example, saying: "Let's start with letter A, what's
next?" and signals student to answer <B>.
