Nature of the Lesson: Grammar
Title of the Lesson: the present perfect, affirmative and negative form
Duration: 55 minutes
Aim: To familiarize form II students with the negative and affirmative form
of the present perfect for their daily speech.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1- draw the rule of the present perfect, affirmative and negative form
2- identify sentences which are in the present perfect
3- put verbs between parenthesis into present perfect, negative and
affirmative from
4- build four(4) personal, correct and meaningful sentences in the present
perfect, in the in affirmative and negative form.

Prerequisites: the students have already been taught the simple past,
the past participle of regular and irregular verbs.
Anticipated problems: the students may have difficulties to express
clearly their arguments.
Anticipated solutions: the teacher will monitor to help them express
their arguments.
Teaching materials: Board, chalk duster, bucket of water.

Unfolding of the lesson

Warm up (3mns)
Step 1: Greetings and date writing (1mn)
The teacher chooses a student to tell the date and write it on the board.
Step 2: singing (1mn) My head, my shoulders my knees ,my toes.
Step 3: Announcement of the day lesson (1mn)
Teacher: Today we are going to study a new grammar lesson, please pay
attention.

I-Presentation stage (13mns)

Procedure: The teacher writes the sentences on the board then asks the
students to read the sentences. After, he also reads and proceeds by analyzing
with the students.

Step 1: Corpus writing:


1-The students played football yesterday.
2- The students have played football.
3-my father gave me some money last week.
4-My father has given me some money.
5-The Children have not arrived.

Step 2: Teach-student interaction.


Teacher: who is going to underline the verbs in the first two sentences on the
board?
- A student underlines “played” in the first sentence and “have played” in
the second.
Teacher: what do you remark concerning the two verbs?
Students: we remark that there is “have” in the second sentence.
Teacher: good! What is the tense of the sentence 1?
Students: It is the simple past.
Teacher: very good! How to you know that it is the simple past?
Students: Because of “yesterday.”
Teacher: very good! Now, what is the tense of sentence 2?
Students: silent.
Teacher: It’s the present perfect. Repeat.
Students: The present perfect.
Teacher: What is the rule?
Students: Subject+ have/has + the past participle +object
Teacher: Very good! Now ,who is going to underline the verb in the
sentence 5?
- A student underlines “have not played”
Teacher: What comes after “have”?
Students: “Not”.
Teacher: “Not” indicates what?
Students: “Not” indicates the negative?
Teacher: So, in which form is the sentence?
Students: The sentence is the negative form.
Teacher: Very good! What is the rule?
Students: Subject + have/has + not + past participle + object.
Teacher: Excellent !

Content of the Lesson

Grammar: the present perfect


I-Structure
1- Affirmative from
Rule: subject+ have/has + past participle + object
Examples:
The students have played football.
My father has given me some money.
2- Negative form
Rule: subject + have/has + not + past participle + object.
Examples:
The students have not played football.
My father has not given me some money.

II-Use
We use the present perfect to describe past actions which the moment
is not known ,but the consequences or results are still visible in the
present.

III-Practice stage (16mns)

Step 1:
Activity 1: Oral (5mns)
Instruction: Listen to me carefully and say whether the sentences I will
give orally are in the present perfect or not. Say yes if the sentence is in
the present perfect and no if it is not in the present perfect.
1- Marie has cleaned the house?
2- The boy slept late last night.
3- We did not go to market yesterday
4- They have not written the lesson.

Expected answers
1-Yes,it is.
2-No,it isn’t.
3-No, isn’t
4-Yes, it is.
Step2 :
Activity 2: written and individual (6mns)
Instruction: Put the verbs between parenthesis into the present
perfect
1- Boukaré ( to get)a good mark
2- The pupils ( to visit) the zoo
3- I ( not see) my friend at the party
4- Nopoko ( not cook) the dinner
5- My brother and sister ( to go) to school
Step 3 :Correction and evaluation (5mns)
The teacher instructs the students to exchange their exercise
copybooks with their neighbors of the same bench and mark 1 for
correct answer and 0 for incorrect answer
Correction
1- Boukaré has got a good mark in English.
2- The pupils have visited the zoo
3- I have not seen my friend at the party
4- Nopoko has not cooked the dinner
5- My brother and sister have not gone to school.
Evaluation:
The teacher instructs the students to give back the copybooks to
their neighbors. He then asks those who got 5/5 to raise up their
hands then those who got 4/5,then those who got 3
The teacher praises those who did well and encourages those who
did not get the average.

Iv-Production stage (23mns)

Step 1:
Activity 1: written and pair work (8mns)
Instruction : With your neighbors of the same bench ,build four
(4) personal ,correct and meaningful sentences using the present
perfect to describe the past activities of your classroom.
Step 2: Correction and adjustment: (7mns)
The teacher asks the students to choose some group reporters to
read parts of their sentences. He then chooses the best sentences
to write on the board.
Step 3: follow up (1mn)
Instruction : At home ,build four ( 4) personal ,correct and
meaningful sentences in the present perfect to describe the past
actions of your family members.
Step 4:Note taking and (6mns) administration duties: The
teacher asks the students to copy down the day’s lesson , while
filling administration duties.
Closing (1)
The teacher thanks the students for their attendance and reminds
them to do the homework.
