The teacher shows up the picture of one of the selected items and asks
students to listen carefully. Then he pronounces it three times before the
students repeat chorally, by row and individually. After that he writes the name
on the board, asks students to repeat again chorally and provides an illustrative
sentence. He proceeds the same way with the remaining selected foods.
Content of the lesson
Vocabulary: Food
1. Rice
Example: Alice eats some rice.
2. Bean
Example: My sister cooks some bean.
3. Meat
Example: Mother buys some meat to cook soup.
4. Fish
Example: I eat some fish this afternoon.
5. Yam
Example: Grandfather likes stew of yam.
6. Bread
Example: Mohamed eats sandwich with bread.
7. Chicken
Example: My father kills a chicken for the dinner.
Stage II: Practice (12mns)
Activity one: Oral (5mns)
Step1: Teacher-students’ interaction
The teacher cleans or hides the name of the selected elements on the board
and gives the instruction to the students.
Instruction: Look at the picture and tell me the name of these foods.
Teacher: What is this?
Student: This is rice.
Teacher: Is this rice, class?
Class: Yes!
Teacher: Excellent!
NB: Three (03) times minimum.
Step 2: Students-students’ interaction
The teacher calls some students to come to the board, he distributes the
remaining pictures to them and asks them to proceed the same way as he did.
Example: Student: What is this?
Student: This is beans.
Student: Is this bean, class?
Class: Yes!
Student: Very good.
They proceed the same way with the rest of the pictures.
The teacher praises them for their efforts.
Activity two: written and individual (7 mns)
Step 1: write correctly
Instruction: Reorder the following letters to find the correct name of the food.
Example: E-C-R-I
Answer: RICE
1. N-A-B-E
2. T-M-A-E
3. N-C-H-K-E-C-I
4. A-R-B-D-E
5. A-M-Y
Step 2: Correction and evaluation
The teacher asks the students to exchange their copybooks for correction.
Expected answers: 1. BEAN
2. MEAT
3. CHICKEN
4. BREAD
5. YAM
Evaluation: the teacher asks to know the students who got 4/4;3/4;2/4;1/4 and
0/4. He praises those who got all the right answers and encourages the others
to do more effort for the next time.
Stage III: Production (20mns)
Step 1: Written and group work (10 mns)
Instruction: With your neighbor(s) of the same table, build five (05) correct
sentences using the names of the selected foods we have learnt.
Step 2: Feedback and adjustments (10mns)
The teacher listens to as many sentences as possible of some groups and
selected the best sentences to report on the board.
The teacher assesses them and corrects the mistakes if there are some.
Follow up(1mn)
Instruction: At home, find the names of foods that your family cooks the week
and build meaningful sentences with them.
Note taking and administrative duties (7 mns)
The teacher fills the record book and check attendance while students are
taking the lesson in their copybooks.

Thank you for your attendance and don’t forget your homework for the next
time. Goodbye!
