Title of the lesson: The simple past of regular verbs (affirmative form)
Aim: To familiarize students with the simple past tense of regular verbs for their
daily use.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, form one pupils will be able to:
- Build five (5) meaningful sentences using the simple past tense in
affirmative form.
Pre-requisite: Students have been taught the personal pronouns (subject and
objects) the possessive adjectives, holidays and fruits.
Anticipated problems: Students may have difficulties with the simple past of
regular verbs ending in y and preceded by a consonant.
Anticipated solutions: The teacher will correct them and lay emphasis on them if
they occur.

Teaching aids: Teacher, board, duster, pieces of chalk, bucket of water.
Step1: Greetings.
The teacher chooses a volunteer to tell the date and ask about the correctness.
The teacher tells that pupil to write the date on the board.
The teacher: today we are going to learn a new grammar lesson on the simple past
of regular verbs in the affirmative form.
Teacher: very good! What rule can we draw from these sentences?
A. Formation.
To form the simple past tense of regular verbs in affirmative form, we have
B. Use.
Some adverbs of time are also used with the simple past tense such as yesterday,
last month, last week, last time, last night, last year.
C. Note.
When the verb is ended in "y "and preceded by consonant it becomes "i" before
adding ed.
When the verb is ended in " y " and preceded by a vowel we just add ed.
Teacher: Listen carefully to the following sentences and say if they are in the
simple past tense or not: answer by yes or no.
Instruction: Put the verbs in parentheses in the simple past tense affirmative form.
Correction.
The teacher order the pupils to exchange their copybooks with their neighbors for
the correction.
Expected answers:
Assessment.
Teacher: how many of you have got five over five? Very good!
How many of you have got three over five? Good enough!
How many of you have got two over five? Pay attention next time.
How many of you have got less than two? Follow carefully next time.

The teacher orders the pupils to give back to their neighbors their copybooks. He
tells them to take the correction. He praises the learners who did great and
encourages those who fail to do better.
Instruction: With your neighbors build five (05) meaningful sentences using the
simple past of regular verbs in affirmative form.
The teacher listens to the students'sentences notes the good ones and asks the
learners to write their sentences on the board.
Step3: Homework.
Instruction: At home, build five meaningful sentences to say what you did during
the last holidays. NB. Use regular verbs.
The teacher tells the learners to copy the lesson. (The date+ the content of the
lesson). He goes through the rows to check if all the pupils are copying the lesson.
While the learners are copying the lesson, the teacher fills the record book and
check attendance.
Step6: Closing.
The teacher thinks he pupils for their attendance, makes the summary of the day's
lesson and reminds the learners to do the homework. He then says good bye.
