tags to his students. He explains and provides examples to illustrate the rule.
Content of the lesson
Date:
Gammar: Question tags
Question tags are short questions attached to the end of a statement. The tag question seeks for
the statement confirmation, agreement or clarification.
Rules:
1. If the statement is affirmative , the tag is negative interrogative
Example: Moussa is a pupil, isn’t he?
2. If the statement is negative, the tag is interrogative
Example: you are not sick, are you?
3. The tag repeats the auxiliary or the modal used in the statement
Example: She can speak Moore, can’t she?
4. If there is no auxiliary in the statement, “DO” is used to form the tag.
Example: you go to school every day, don’t you?
5. If the subject of the statement is a noun, it is replaced by the suitable pronoun
in the tag
Example: Peter has sunglasses, hasn’t he?
6. If the subject of the statement is “this” or “that”, it is replaced by “it”in the
tag.
Example: That was very nice, wasn’t it?
7. If the statement is formed with “there is” or “there are”, the tag is formed
with “there”.
Example: There is a mistake, isn’t there?
8. If the subject of the statement is “everybody, nobody, anybody, somebody” it
is replaced by “they” in the tag.
Examples: Nobody comes here, do they?
Everybody likes success, don’t they?
Remember: am → aren’t
