Lesson Plan – Present Perfect Simple – Reinforcement

Unit/Theme: Unit 42 Tim/Consolidation – Present Perfect Simple

Previous work: Students have previously learned the Present Perfect Simple (form, uses, and time
expressions).

Aim: to extend students’ practice with the present perfect tense through reading, speaking and
controlled practice.

Time allowed: 50 minutes

Lesson type: Lesson of reinforcement

Skills: speaking, reading, writing, listening

Objectives: by the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

 consolidate the use of Present Perfect Simple;


 use appropriate adverbs (ever, yet, for, since, etc.) and time expressions together with Present
Perfect Simple, when forming questions and statements;
 solve different types of exercises using Present Perfect Simple;
 distinguish the difference between Present Perfect Simple and Simple Past Tense;
 engage in speaking activity to use Present Perfect Tense and Simple Past Tense;
 listen to and understand a short conversation about someone’s experiences;

Anticipated problems: Distinguishing and using the Present Perfect Tense and the Simple Past Tense by
finding out the time adverbial and by understanding the sentence meaning.

Solutions: The teacher facilitates effective student learning through specific instructions and gradually
checks students' understanding of the verbal structures. The teacher uses an explicit short video that
clarifies the differences between the two tenses.

Teaching aids: blackboard, computer, conversation cards, and worksheets.

Teaching techniques: prediction, conversation, controlled exercises, pair work, brainstorming.

Teaching methods: the Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Method, the Audiolingual Method,
Suggestopedia.

LESSON STAGES

 Warm-up (Time: 6 mins)

Aim: to prepare the students for the lesson.

Procedure:

 Teacher greets the students, introduces herself and asks them several questions, such as: How
are you today?, What’s the weather like today?;
 Activity 1: Correcting the homework: the teacher checks homework orally with students.

Interaction: T-Ss1; Ss-T

 Lead-in (Time: 11 mins)

Aim: to introduce the topic and to review students’ previous knowledge on Present Perfect Simple.

 Activity 2: conversation

Procedure:

 Formulation of the object of the lesson: the teacher informs the students that they are going to
consolidate their knowledge on Present Perfect Simple. At the same time she writes the title on
the blackboard.
 Teacher shares randomly some conversation cards and asks the students to read each question
aloud and try to answer it; ( 6 mins)
 Activity 3: revision of the theoretical part (brainstorming)

Procedure:

 Based on this activity and their previous knowledge, teacher asks the students to point out some
of the most important things they can say about this tense;
 Teacher creates a Brainstorming-web on the blackboard in which she marks all the relevant
answers. Teacher encourages the students to come up with answers (she might give some
hints/address some guiding questions). (5 mins)
 Presentation (23 mins)
Aims:
- to improve students’ fluency of English and listening skills;
- to practise Present Perfect Simple in a controlled way and to improve students’ writing skills;
- to accustom the students to use the appropriate adverbs/time expressions and to distinguish
between Present Perfect (unfinished time) and Past Simple (finished time).
 Activity 4: listening, speaking

Procedure:
 The teacher asks the students to watch an extra video about someone’s experiences. The video
explains also the situations when we use Past Simple and Present Perfect. After listening to the
video, she asks the students to solve individually the first exercise on their worksheet.
 The teacher checks the answers with the students. (7 mins)
 Activity 5: writing

Procedure:
 The teacher asks the students to solve the second exercise from the worksheet. She provides
close instructions and, if necessary, she explains the unknown words.
 The students complete the task. The teacher checks the students’ worksheets after they have
finished and clarifies one more time the use of for and since. (6 mins)

 The teacher asks the students to work in pairs in order to solve the third exercise from their
handout. (10 mins)

Aim: to assess students’ understanding of Present Perfect Simple.
 Activity 7: Grammar Quiz on Present Perfect Simple

Procedure:
 The teacher delivers the students a quick grammar quiz on Present Perfect Simple;
 The students self-evaluate themselves.

 Assigning the homework and offering feedback (2 min)
Procedure: The teacher gives instructions for the homework assignment. (Exercise 4 from the
worksheet).
