introduction

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), also known in France


as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO), is a UN agency that strives for food security at the planet.

FAO is a specialized organization of the United Nations system,


created in 1945 in Quebec City. FAO has had its headquarters in
Rome at the Palazzo FAO since 1951. Since 15 June 2013 FAO has
had 197 members, 194 member countries, one member organization
(the European Union) and two associate members (the Faroe Islands
and Tokelau)

What is the objective of FAO?


"Helping to build a world free from hunger" is the motto of FAO. On
its logo is the Latin expression "Fiat panis", which means "Let there
be bread (for all)". Today, according to FAO figures, 870 million
people across the globe are suffering from chronic hunger. 171
million children under the age of five suffer from chronic
malnutrition, which is reflected in stunting. Nearly 104 million
children are underweight, and 55 million are emaciated as a result of
acute malnutrition.
FAO focuses :
For the 2014-2015 biennium, FAO has identified the following
priorities in its fight against hunger

Contributing to the eradication of hunger, food insecurity and


malnutrition - Freeing the world of hunger by promoting policies and
political commitments to food security and ensuring that up-to-date
information on food security problems is available and accessible
Relating to hunger and nutrition, and on the solutions that can be
made.
Making agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and
sustainable - Promote scientifically proven policies and practices that
promote high productivity in agricultural sectors (crops, livestock,
forestry and fisheries), while at the same time sparing the natural
resource base .
Reducing rural poverty - Helping the rural poor to access the
resources and services they need - including rural employment and
social protection systems - to move the specter away from poverty.
Promote the development of open and efficient agricultural and food
systems - Contribute to the development of safe and effective food
systems that support small-scale agriculture and reduce poverty and
hunger in rural areas.
Improving resilience of livelihoods to disasters - Helping countries to
be better prepared for natural and man-made disasters, mitigating
risks and improving the resilience of their food and agricultural
systems.

How is FAO organized?


FAO is an intergovernmental organization under the aegis of the
United Nations. It has 194 member states, two associate members and
one member organization, the European Union. The organization is
based in Rome, Italy and is present in more than 130 countries.
