Computer Integrated Manufacturing (MEM562)

Question:

Write the definition of computer -integrated manufacturing (CIM)?

Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) refers to the use of computer

controlled machineries and automation systems in manufacturing products. CIM is a
manufacturing approach that provides a complete automation of a manufacturing
facility. All the operations are controlled by computers and have a common storage
and distribution. CIM combines various technologies like computer-aided design
(CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to provide an error free
manufacturing process that reduces manual labour and automates repetitive tasks.
The CIM approach increases the speed of the manufacturing process and uses real-
time sensors and closed-loop control processes to automate the manufacturing
process. It is widely used in the automotive, aviation, space and ship-building
industries.

Describe all the elements of the enterprise wheel?

1. Customer.

A customer centered mission provides a clear direction to align activities and

empowers the work of teams in the new manufacturing enterprise. The enterprise
focus on customers while making their strategies.

2. People and teamwork in the organization.

The central role of people in the organization forms the inner circle of the
wheel. The enterprise is only as strong as its people, organization, and culture.

3. Shared knowledge and system.

Knowledge is as much important as the system. The shared knowledge can

be develop as a system that can be used by others. With enough knowledge, a
system can be created.

4. Process.

Companies are examining processes more closely than ever. This closer look
includes areas like process mapping process simplification, process research,
reengineering, design of experiments, competitive benchmarking, core
competencies, and best practices. The more efficient the process, the faster the
work can be done.

5. Resources and responsibilities.

The efficiency of an organization in turning capital into resources truly needs.

Resources come into the company, and finished goods are sent to distributors
and customers. The company is responsible to manage the resources.

6. Manufacture infrastructure.

Describe the three-step process for implementing CIM?

First step:

Assessments of the enterprise are in 3 areas. Capability, strength and

weaknesses are identified, measured and documented.

i. Technology – level and process capability.

ii. Human resources – current workforce readiness to adopt CIM.
iii. Systems.

Second step:

Simplification- elimination of waste. Need to eliminate unneeded operations

before automating. For example; by eliminate transportation by placing machines
nearer.

Third step:

Implementation with the performance measures. Install hardware and

software as specified.

What are the obstacles to a CIM implementation?

CIM requires a teamwork approach in which every member has a key role to
play. CIM has been implemented successfully in companies such as Allen Bradley,
Continental Can Co. Inc., and Texas Instruments. One of the biggest obstacles to
CIM implementation is that systems are conceived by corporate headquarters and
then pushed down onto a plant manager. Training and involvement help to minimize
worker resistance. Beside that, process control; computers may be used to assist the
human operators of the manufacturing facility, but human error on handling the
circumstances which could not be foreseen by the designers of the control software.
Then, the integration of components from different suppliers. Finally, the data
integrity; the higher the degree of automation, the more critical is the integrity of the
data used to control the machines.
