PANAMA AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR MORE ACTIVE
LOGISTICS

The sector has acquired cutting edge technology for the protection and safety of the
operation and its human resources.

The sector dedicated to the production of artificial intelligence has worked hard in the midst
of the pandemic, in the search for solutions that help to overcome the challenges that this
new global reality has imposed.

Machine learning systems are a fundamental axis in artificial intelligence. These

technologies allow large amounts of data to be processed to detect patterns. In this way, this
information can be used to obtain immediate results.

In the Panamanian logistics hub, artificial intelligence has also been key to keeping the
operation resilient. For example, among logistics assets that have made use of this
technology is the Tocumen International Airport and in the Panamanian port system, the
ports of Panama Ports Company.

These important assets within the logistics hub have acquired state-of-the-art technology to
safeguard their staff, such as thermal infrared cameras for mass monitoring of body
temperature.

This technology allows security officers in the various areas of the premises to carry out
hundreds of checks in a few minutes, without the need for direct contact.

With high-precision ± 0.3 ℃ monitoring with the built-in artificial intelligence algorithm, it
simultaneously monitors a group of people from a distance of up to 3 meters, allowing
quick, contactless access.

According to Enrique Luna, from Dahua Technology, a company that markets these
devices, “When installed, it helps to monitor employees and customers with abnormal body
temperatures. It notifies users to take appropriate action before temperatures change
significantly, allowing for proper protocol and second verification by medical professionals
if necessary. "
This novel technology that has gained relevance in the midst of this health crisis is also
being installed in commercial premises and supermarkets.

Alejandro Carbonell, from the Panamanian Chamber of Technology (CAPATEC), points

out that Panama can take advantage of all the technology that the world is using, adapt it to
our context and get the most out of it. "There is a lot to do, but at the same time, great
opportunities to apply models that are working efficiently in other countries," he says.

For example, references to contact tracing applications are being used widely in Asia, as
well as in other regions such as India, Italy and Israel, while other states are working on
developing similar solutions.

Although their operation varies, in general they all start from the idea that it is possible to
use mobile geolocation technologies to detect possible contacts of their owners with other
possible positive cases.

Artificial intelligence has had a great impact in the fight against the pandemic, but beyond
this great health crisis, it has come to stay and help create safer and smarter societies.

At the global level, logistics companies such as Amazon, DHL and DB Schenker, among
many others, already make use of robotics and artificial intelligence to streamline
previously manual processes, thus optimizing their supply chain, while making their
operations more profitable. business.
