What’s In

Our technology as of this time are become a highly advance, even preparing
some task we rely on computer as part of our daily needs. Before, artist are busy
planning thinking of what is the best design to be developed in order to convince the
client, they even prepare it for a lot of time. But today and for the future this task
become easy and less time and effort no more paper, time and effort to be wasted.

Here comes the CAD or Computer – Aided Drawing is an application software

where the attributes of the computer. Using this software would mean faster and
easier to produce of 100% quality output. CAD is essential skills to be acquired by a
draftsman as of todays technologies in order to finish the task accurately no more
erasures and errors to be found on the projects.
But take note it is essential also to learn first the mechanical drawing instead.
Do not rely more on CAD. Remember also the tradition of manual drawing.
What’s New
Activity 1.1 Direction: Compare & Contrast
Directions: Observe the picture below and answer the guide questions. Write your
answers in your activity notebook.

1. What can you say about the pictures below?

2. What are the differences of these two pictures in terms of how they were
made?
3. What picture is free hand drawing? How about computer aided drawing?

Drawing this can be mechanical or technical.

Mechanical drawing is sometimes called artistic drawing. This is done mechanically
or using special drawing instrument or sometimes doing it freehand only without any
instruments.

Technical drawing on the other hand is usually done for the purpose of conveying
technical information, or illustrating concepts and the emphasis is more on making
sure the information, measurements, and content of the drawing is accurate and
correct versus mechanical drawing. Technical drawing is sometimes done using
AutoCAD application.

Let us find out what is this AutoCAD and how it works!

What is It

Lesson 1. Operating CAD Software and Computer Hardware

This lesson is to enable the student to prepare and to familiarize himself with
the different things needed in operating the CAD software and the computer
hardware.

A.THE HARDWARE

The computer hardware is the physical equipment that makes up the

computer system. These parts can be seen and can be touch. It is divided into two
a System hardware and computer peripherals.

The computer hardware components include the Central Processing Unit

(CPU), the keyboard, the monitor and primary storage memory (RAM), and the
secondary storage memory. Peripherals include disk drives, mouse, digitizers,
printers/plotters, etc.

System Unit – The main part of a microcomputer, is sometimes called the chassis.
It includes the following parts: motherboard, microprocessor, memory chips, buses,
ports, expansion slots, and cards.

Sample System Unit

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) – is the brain of the computer where it performs
all instructions and calculations that are needed to manage the flow of information.
It holds instructions, data, and intermediate final results during processing. It also
receives instructions from software or computer programs and executes them.

Sample Central Processing Unit

Keyboard – is the principal device for communicating with your computer.

All keyboards have letter keys, punctuation keys, and a space bar which is similar
to the keys on a typewriter. Keyboards also have functions, numeric and arrow
keys in additional to Alt, Ctrl, and Enter keys.

Sample Keyboard

Monitor – it has a screen that displays information, such as the instruction you send
to your computer and the information and results from your computer sends back
after interpreting your instruction.

Sample Monitor
Hard Disk Drive (HDD) – it is known as a hard drive. A storage device that is installed
inside the computer. The hard drive is used as permanent storage for data. In a
Windows computer, the hard drive is usually configured as the C: drive and contains
the operating system and applications.

Sample Hard Disk Drive

Optical Drive – is a storage device that uses lasers to read data on the
optical media. There are three types of optical drives: Compact Disc (CD), Digital
Versatile Disc (DVD) and Blu-ray Disc (BD).

Optical Drive

Mouse – is a small hand-held device used to control the cursor/crosshair on the

screen. It is used to select an item by pointing to it and clicking a button.

Sample Mouse
Digitizer Tablet – is a graphics drawing tablet used for sketching new images or
tracing old ones. It is also called a "graphics tablet," where the user writes or draws
on the surface of the device with a wired or wireless pen or puck. Often, mistakenly
called a mouse, the puck is officially the "tablet cursor."

Sample Digitizer Tablet

Printer – It is an output device that is used to print information processed by your

computer. Printers and plotters vary in speed and output capabilities.

Sample of Printer
Plotter – an output device that can produce better quality drawings as compared to
the printer, however, the speed of plotter is generally slower than a printer.

Sample Plotter

A. SOFTWARE

The software is the set of programs that make a computer run. Opposite to
hardware, the software is an intangible part of a computer. They are sets of
instructions that tell the computer what to do to come up with the desired result.
The software can be categorized into two main groups: operating system software
and application software.

Operating System Software

The operating system software provides various levels of interaction (called

interface) between the computer and the user, as well as between the computer and
the application software. These are the programs that work without your
intervention. They automatically open once you boot your computer. Some of their
tasks include loading and running programs, checking and protecting computers,
and controlling hardware.
Samples of Operating System
o LINUX
o WINDOWS
o MacOS

Application Software

The application software also called programs, has a specific use or task to
perform such as AutoCAD for Architectural drawings and layouts, Lotus 1-2-3
for business and marketing, Adobe Photoshop for image processing, and so on.

Sample Application Software Logos

B. CAD System

Introduction to CAD System

Computer-aided design (CAD), also known as computer-aided drafting

and design (CADD), is the use of computer systems to assist in the
creation, modification, and analysis of a design. It is a process of
creating technical drawings with the use of computer software. CAD
software is used to increase productivity and to improve the quality of
design.

Computer-aided design has been around since 1964. However, it was not
broadly used until 1982, when the CAD system such as AutoCAD became accessible
on microcomputers. ACAD software uses either vector-based graphics to show the
objects of traditional drafting, or may also produce faster graphics showing the
realistic images of the designed objects.

CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space;
or curves, surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space. CAD is avital
industrial art widely used in many applications, including automotive, shipbuilding,
and aerospace industries; industrial and architectural design; prosthetics; and many
more. CAD is also widely utilized to produce computer animation for special effects
in movies, advertising, and technical manuals.

Modern electronic drafting tools are often specialized computer-aided design

packages. Basic drafting tools are included in all CAD programs, but some offer
advanced automation that is specifically designed for drafting and architectural
design. The tools that are right for you will depend on your budget.

AutoCAD
An AutoCAD is a commercial product made by Autodesk, with many versions,
including one called AutoCAD Architecture. AutoCAD Architecture has purpose-built
features specifically designed for architectural drafting. In addition to design tools
for initial architectural conceptualization, it offers tools to make building renovations
faster and easier. The productivity tools include those that reflect the actual design
of walls and other structures. AutoCAD can maintain precise dimensional spacing
among components such as walls, beams, columns, and doors. AutoCAD
Architecture offers a library of pre-built components to help speed up and automate
the design and construction process.

Starting an AutoCAD

There are many ways of starting the AutoCAD program. It would depend on
your preferences the way you want to start. Follow each of the steps below:
1. From the Start Menu.
- Click Start >Look for AutoCAD Folder>Double click on AutoCAD
Architecture from the Windows Program Manager

Double
click
this.

2. From a desktop shortcut or quick launch toolbar. - Double-click the AutoCAD icon
from your desktop.

3. By opening the drawing file.

- Double-click the drawing file icon inside a folder or in any location from your
computer. Usually it is located in your documents.
